Anyway, I'm back in action! Fitted a PCIE to dual usb 3 header card yesterday. So now I can use both the front bay card reader as well as the top usb ports on the case. I do wish I'd went with a full atx motherboard though, as that's me out of PCIE slots now :-( Oh well, it'll do just now...
Might be worth buying a replacement connector, especially since it's just a few quid for one. I'm certainly not intending on selling my current motherboard CPU etc, so I could live with a repair job! Of course that will null any motherboard warranty...
That is another option as well.
I'm now thinking about just getting an external USB 3 hub, along with a decent usb 3 multi card reader, there isn't much choice in the way of decent combination usb 3 hubs with in built card readers.
For the two usb ports on the top of the case, I could live...
Being the klutz that I am, I've managed to break one of the pins off my MSI B550m Pro vdh WiFi motherboard.
I was only using it for a 3.5" bay memory card reader / usb hub.
I take a reasonable "repair" would be to just fit a pcie usb 3 header card, then those use the ports on the pcie card...
Thanks tammzy! I wasn't sure a b450 would have been compatible with the Ryzen 7 CPU? Although that's probably due to my lack of familiarity with Ryzen era CPUs and compatible motherboards.
Although I still think the Ryzen 7 3700x processor will be best "bang for buck" for me, since I don't do...
I'm still undecided whether the Ryzen 7, 3700X would be a better match for my needs than the Ryzen 5 5700G? Especially since the Ryzen 7 3700X has 8C / 16t compared to the Ryzen 5, 5700G 6C / 12t.
I've already got an Nvidia GTX 1660 GPU so I'm not needing onboard graphics.
--edit-- also to add I've never had much success with OpenCL (open compute language) hardware acceleration on Linux using AMD GPUs / Apus, hence me using a discrete Nvidia card.
What do people think of this combination, based on a Ryzen 7, 3700X
My basket at Overclockers UK:
1 x Gigabyte B550M S2H (AMD AM4) B550 Micro-ATX Motherboard= £79.99
1 x AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Eight Core 4.4GHz (Socket AM4) Processor - Retail= £259.99
1 x be quiet! Pure Rock 2 Black CPU Cooler -...
It's just a hobby for me, but I feel I could do with an upgrade for my current system as it's starting to show it's age now.
Thanks mods for moving the post :-)
Hi All.
I'm looking for some advice with regards to the best upgrade path from my current rig, which is an AMD A8-6600K Cpu, with 16gb DDR3 Ram, and Asus A88XM-A motherboard. GPU is an 6gb Nvidia GTX1660.
Ideally I'd be looking to spend £550 or there abouts all in for CPU, motherboard, and...
Apologies for the thread necromancy, but I've needed to borrow the Nvidia GT1030 from my photo editing rig to get an old spare PC up and running with zwift (cycle training software). The AMD A8 6600K Onboard graphics are running my monitor at 2560x1440 via HDMI. :-)
Thanks Matt.
Pretty pleased with the monitor. Seems to be quite well calibrated out of the box. Certainly much more screen real estate compared to my old dell 20" 1680x1050 monitor :-)
Orbitalwash, mainly Hugin panorama software, gimp 2.10 , darktable etc on Ubuntu Mate 18.04. Sadly the onboard graphics on my system does not support HDMI resolutions over 4096 x 2160 @ 24 Hz or 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz, hence my need for a discrete GPU.
