Change the cooler to something cheap like a Gelid Icy Vision 2 or Accelero. Have used Gelids on a number of old card's and it worked wonders at the time.

No don't think so, have changed it a few times though, but only use Nvidia GPU's normally and won't touch AMD cpu's as they are crap. The r9 290x is on one of my old systems, prob won't touch AMD cards again. Is there a way to find out what my old names were?

I went from a r9 290x to a 980ti MSI and its a huge difference, the 980ti's are superb. Running my rog swift 1440p maxed on every game with ease, but I would wait for Pascal at this time or for a cheaper 980ti.

If that is ref cooler, maybe consider changing it for an aftermarket one?, I can't stand ref coolers.

I have built into the luxe 3 times and each time the cooling has been great, so sounds like it's not down to the case to me. P4 is prob spot on with what he said.

I have a 2600k on my 2nd pc at 4.8ghz and its been stable for a few years at 1.4ghz.

Tbh any of the rog swifts are immense mate but I would upgrade to a better card to get the most out of it.

Go with a X99 system 5820k, SSD's are cheap now.

It's struggling because the cpu is getting on and a single 980 isn't enough to run games flawlessley at 1440

980ti or wait for pascal & rog swift 165hertz 1440p IPS, thats the only thing I would change

Try an earlier Nvidia driver like Danny said and see if that's any different first

Temps for gpu seem very high, my MSI 980ti is at least 20 degree less than that at full load and overclocked. Is that normal temps for that card?

Did you sort this out? I have had no issues on the latest Nvidia driver, is that what is causing it for you? Sounds like an overclock issue to me tbh.
