Using summer tyres all year round

Winter tyres weren't even a thing in the UK until about 2010 when we had unusually heavy snow fall. It was either regular tyres or snow chains, and I've never known anyone need the latter. Maybe if you've got a farm in the Peak District.

Cool. Ordered. Could have picked one up from Leeds today, but not driving there just for that.

Fancy a 13 Pro. Apple are saying 7th-14th Dec delivery- how accurate are Apple's delivery dates at the minute?

What have you done to your car today?

I've always found my engine runs better, even vs regular Shell diesel. This is the EA189 VAG 4-cylinder, so not the last word in refinement. Pick up seems better at low revs too. Definitely a difference between it and regular Shell, which in turn is better than supermarket diesel (in my...

What have you done to your car today?

£1.699/litre now for V-Power diesel. Crackers. Brent at $84, so not particularly high. Big oil in full clawback mode now. Can see it pushing more people to electric if it's sustained for any period.

When are you going fully electric?

Who says income lost from fuel duty has to go on cost of electricity or a road charging scheme? That money can be clawed back from anywhere else. It could go on VAT, income tax/NI, other consumption taxes- any number of things.

When are you going fully electric?

True, but everything from analogue and digital computers, ARPANET and the Web have been created by or developed though public funding, not to mention the technological developments in physics, electronics, materials and other forms of engineering behind the technology driven by universities...

When are you going fully electric?

Of course electric vehicles are being subsidised- that's the point. Drive market share at a time when market forces alone wouldn't be enough to encourage adoption. Once the user base grows and economies of scale kick in, the cars and batteries will be cheaper, and the subsidies will be removed-...

petrol stations price discussion (was ‘chaos’)

It's like The Prisoner's Dilemma. If we co-operated, we could get better results for everyone. But people don't- they are largely driven by self-interest. Human behaviour can be quite easy to predict- we are driven most strongly by emotional responses. Rationality is rare. Think I might have...

If you’re going to panic buy, always makes sense to do it before everyone else does ;)

Filled up just now with V-Power Diesel at a local Shell. £1.569/litre though :p Just over half the pumps seemed to be working at that station.

Local Sainsbury's looked fine- no queues. Oddly, they'd coned off the mini-slip road to the filling station, but were waving cars through a gap whenever they wanted to come in. Not seen any silly queues locally.

When are you going fully electric?

Where have the warnings been about power cuts? The National Grid have said there is ample capacity even with a huge increase in electric vehicles. I was surprised that there is still plenty of spare generating capacity given recent coal and nuclear station closures, but apparently so. Demand for...

petrol stations price discussion (was ‘chaos’)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-58767230 This made me laugh. 20 cars ended up tailing a tanker driver, thinking he was delivering fuel. They followed him to a building site, he stopped, and they asked him which filling station he was delivering to. Driver had to tell...

    Worst car you have driven

I'd probably say: Chevrolet Aveo (just bad all around), Hyundai i20 (might have been the particular one I drove, but the brakes were very poor), Clio MK3 (not a bad car as such, but no feel to steering and a gear change almost comically devoid of feel). They're the cars that spring to mind...
