I am also waiting for the new 15" retina MBPs to be released. The main improvements that I am looking forward to are increased battery life and 802.11ac wi-fi. As I usually keep my machine for 3 years I am sure I will be taking advantage of the increased wi-fi sped in that time.

The only difference will be that the keyboard will not have the £ symbol but will have # instead. Also the enter key will be short and wide like the shift key and the power adapter will be a USA plug which is easy to swap.

I think the MacBook Air sounds right for you. If you are using it for work I wouldn't suggest an iPad, I think you will find it limiting. As for performance, day to day tasks on the Air will be very quick due to the SSD drive.

The only reason I would consider upgrading is to get more storage space. Apart from that most of the improvements that I would find useful are all software based so I think I will hold off, and thats coming from someone who upgraded to a 4s from a 4 on launch day.
