There is fast travel - it's available at Nero points, friendly camps (at trust level 1) and ambush camps as well I believe. You also need to make sure that all infestations along the travel route are cleared.

IMHO the base game is fine - there's a stack of content to be getting on with. It is a slow paced game and completing tasks around just the first couple of maps can take quite a bit of time (10's of hours). You'll then get a feel for whether you'd like to purchase the additional content or not...
