Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

I could see AMD reaching $15+ this year. Remember it all depends on how well Vega and Zen performs. If Zen is good, especially for Data Centers than I could definitely see AMD hitting $15+. Remember they have like 3% market share in the Data Centers. If they could reach 10% that's a huge boost.

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

I wouldn't make fun of the guy who masterminded the "small die" strategy with the HD 4850/HD 4870 series which hurt nVidia (as a matter of fact that was they first time in over a decade where nVidia had a loss due to how effective the HD 4850/HD 4870 was). I believe the HD 4870 is still one of...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

While I am not going to necessarily disagree with what you stated. AMD CEO Lisa Su also culled at least 3 executives I know include the one guy who was running their Graphics Division who was with ATI going back to 1998 and was replaced by Raja Koduri the now Graphics Head of RTG once RTG was...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

While I agree with you that having new talent come in provides a fresh perspective and for the better. And it helps the company become better due to the new ideas that new employees bring in and perspectives that might be better or lacking in the company they come into. My only gripe is...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

This is true. After their last CEO let go of many Graphics talent including the guy who invented EyeFinity there was an exodus of talent. As a matter of fact one of their top Graphics Guys Eric Demers who worked on the GCN architecture left for QualComm shortly after the layoffs happened in late...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

I would agree. I think the R9 290/290X was the last graphics card that really went head to head with nVidia in the high end sucessfully. Only issue was that it was hotter. I think this has to do with the fact that they lost a lot of talent in the last 5 years. I mean heavy duty talent that...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

I agree. Clearly Vega wasn't ready in the Summer of 2016. Hopefully, with Vega they will get into the swing of things in 2017 and with Navi they will be able to go head to head with nVidia's Volta in 2018. AMD needs to get back into the days especially in the pre-2011 where they were in lock...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

Not having anything to compete with the high end can never be considered a positive. They could have had Polaris compete with in the mid to low end and Vega compete with the high end. nVidia just released record revenue with $1.2 billion in revenue just in their Gaming Segment (which...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

This is what you said: Explain to me how " stop chasing the £400+ market" is not considered going after the high end? Pretty much all high end graphics have been in the £400+ range at the time they were released.

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

I do agree that they produced products that were too far ahead of it's time that were not beneficial ie 8 core bulldozer when many windows and other applications didn't use much multicore. Having said that implementing ACE engine did benefit them and it was a smart move. Many people chose...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

I agree. They simply don't have Vega ready, which is unfortunate because that is letting nVidia reign free on the high end with the GTX 1070/1080 abated. I do agree that 2017 will be the year for them with Zen and Vega. 2016 was a good sign with Polaris being fairly successful and them...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

Well you are right about the R9 290X getting slightly thumped by the 780 Ti but look at the 780 Ti now. R9 290X is creaming it in benchmarks. You are right about the mining craze that helped the sales of the R9 290/X series but that wasn't the only reason, it was damn good card for the price it...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

Well obviously they will have to put out something more competitive than the Fury X when they put out a comparative part going against a high end nVidia. Something like the 290X at the very least. But I was commenting on your earlier claim that they should only focus on the mid to low end...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

You read nothing about what I stated earlier. They need to make a high end card that is not expensive to make. Why in the world are you comparing the Fury X to the GTX 1070/1080 they are completely different generation on a totally new node. That is silly. :p Fury X should be compared to the...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

This is true. There is a lot of association with respect to "image wise". You see that in the car market. Audi wouldn't be Audi if they didn't compete with BMW as a sports Luxury brand in the high end. If Audi just produced mid end cars and if BMW had produced a mid-end car at the same price as...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

Well I do agree that they should come up with a high end that doesn't cost too much too produce. That's not what I am arguing about. I am arguing about completely surrendering the high end which you were advocating by telling only to focus on the mid-end. Which is silly. They have competed...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

I am not arguing against the RX 480. But they still don't have a card to compete with the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080. If they did their profit margins would be higher and they would be in lock step with nVidia in terms of technology. That is my argument. You can't just focus on the mid end. You...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

Yes, I do agree they lacked a good mid range product post 7850/7870 series. That's why I stated you would have to have strong mid-range product in order to offset cost's of the developing high end product. Yes, they did lose site of the mid/low end with respect to power consumption and getting...

Officially 10 Years since the ATI AMD merger. Was it a good idea?

No one is saying nVidia will do that. But they can always use their technological advantage and use it in their mid range and in their next generation. There is a lot of benefit coming out of being on the cutting edge and having technological leadership. Ignoring the high end would not only...
