Take a ride onboard the huge Avro Vulcan Bomber flown by Dave Johnson, Chairman of the Large Model Association. This radio controlled model is powered by 4 micro gas turbine jet engines. After he gets in the air the Valiant and Victor bombers flown by his son and grandson, Andy and Adam, take...
Climb onboard this big radio controlled A-10 Tank Buster and take a ride at the Wings & Wheels Model Show. This model jet aircraft is powered by 2 micro turbine jet engines. This is a 360 panoramic video so try and keep the second A-10 in view by using your mouse pointer from about 6 minutes...
Take a ride on Steve Carr's huge 55% scale Yak 54 for his aerobatic flight at East Kirkby Large Model Association Show. This is a 360 panoramic video! This means YOU control the view. Use your mouse pointer to pan around and change the field of view. If watching on a smart phone you can tilt the...
Just got the Insta360 ONE video camera and am using it on my 'toy' planes. Adds an awesome dimension to onboard footage. You can pan the view while you are watching if you have a capable browser. With a smart phone you can move it to change the view as well !
Here it is on my radio controlled...
I was quite amazed by this. I had never seen or even heard of a Magnus Effect plane until Finley showed up with what looked like an upside down lawn mower. He's a very articulate kid and talked me through the physics of how this thing works. It doesn't just work...it flies really well...and he...
2017 was a good year for giant scale model aircraft. Travelling around the country to several shows I got the opportunity to film some of these monsters in action. Most of these take several years to build from scratch. Quite amazing engineering achievements. Here are my top 10 in no particular...
It's been another great year for radio controlled big toy action. Was difficult deciding what clips to pull into my annual crash and thrill action compilation. But here are my best bits. Looking forward to 2018 already.
My buddy Steve Carr flying his Pilot-RC 55% Yak-54 radio controlled plane. Steve's got a real hang of this model now. Not a lot he can't do with it. He's an engineer by trade so worth mentioning that he constructed the engine himself. Filmed by me in UltraHD / 4K !
In this case I added the sound to the video. Couldn't resist! Here's another super realistic jet. Great these models are created because sometimes the full size doesn't fly any more. The English Electric Lightning cold war supersonic jet here is a good example.
Some details of this amazing...
We use Jet A-1 fuel used by full size jets which is easy to get if you are near a small airport, but it does smell, so I tend to use paraffin. Some use diesel but often need to tinker with the engine ECU as it burns differently. We then add in 5% synthetic turbine oil so the bearings are...
I've been flying RC jets for a while. That A-10 would be a pussycat to fly compared to my other jets. Bigger planes tend to fly easier. Problem is knowing how much it costs when you're flying it. This is my 250mph "Ultra Flash". Gets the adrenaline pumping.
Steve Johnson, regular UK RC Show pilot, flies his new A-10 at BMFA National Visitor Centre in Buckminster, UK. This Skymaster A-10 is 1:6.25 scale with length 2552 mm (101.3”) and wingspan 2784mm (109.6”). Dry weight is 20kg to 22kg (45-48Lbs) and the model needs 13-15 servos.
There are a few gyro gadgets out there that can be fitted between the RC receiver and servos to achieve that. Basically correct for any change in attitude of the model not created by inputs from the pilot. Will be interesting to get one and make a comparison.
New craze in the flying toy market and is a great new product for trying out FPV for the first time. All you need is a set of FPV goggles and you can fly this RC plane like you are onboard.
This wing just requires 4 screws to put together. No glue. Took more time to apply the 6 decals than it...
Wasn't aware these projectiles could get THAT quick. I guess having a race tuned engine, very little fuel onboard to minimise weight and one wing helps ! Filmed in UltraHD / 4K. Watch out for the super slo mo at the end...it's still fast.
Don't mind admitting I was very very scared filming this. I travel around to a lot of public shows for radio controlled toys...and this is BY FAR the scariest thing I have filmed. Decapitation seemed a real possibility so I just hovered behind the safety fence...but you definitely get a...
The pyrotechnic war is always a big highlight of the Southern Model Show. This year didn't disappoint. Several planes caught fire and crashed. All in name of entertainment and fun for the crowd (and pilots). Here is a great vid of the action. Filmed in UltraHD/4K with the Panasonic AG-UX180 4K...
