If you intend to use this machine while you save up for a GPU, you need to consider a "G" range AMD processor.
The 4500 et. al. will not produce any video output on the motherboard HDMI. (I'm 90% sure on this). The motherboard only provides the Phy (sical) layer for the HDMI/DP it requires an...
M.2 drives are CHEAPER than SSDs and about 10 times faster.
Not using them, as all motherboards made this decade support them would be foolish.
Not all B550s are alike. However almost all of them will support 1 on the mobo and 1 in each x4 or x8 slot. Gen3 at least.
I might have a play with TrueNAS while I have the server is "lab mode".
To go that approach I can just do a "lift and shift" of the current server OS. There docker is managed manually with docker-compose (developer style) and VMs run in a headless VirtualBox.
It's just much less "integrated"...
Yea I set it up with ZFS mirror on the boot pair.
I went ahead and trialed it for a few evenings. Basically installed a bunch of VMs, setting up a trial server. I think I like it.
What I'm less sure of is, how much hassle it will be if and when it fails for some reason. I suppose it does...
Both 360s yes. If I was to do it again I would probably not both with the 360 for the CPU. With the heatspreader and stuff, I just can't seem to get fast enough heat transfer.
GPU within a few seconds of running FurMark I can feel warm air coming out of the GPU radiator. When it's been...
Although. That GPU is awfully close to the bottom of the case. You could get "buffet" noises at high fan rpm, but that sounds like "puffing" noise.
Your PSU looks like it's set for a bottom exhaust. Does the PC sit up on legs with free airflow beneath?
Sounds like a fan bearing. Honestly though I had to turn the volume right up. I expect it's a 0 RPM fan in the PSU which is only turning on at all when the PSU starts to get warm under gaming load.
I think you are being paranoid. Try not to think about it and the noise will go away.
I'd...
Where is teh NVMe drive plugged in?
Some Mobo's have 2 or 3 sockets, but often have restrictions on when and what settings need to be on to use more than 1.
Try re-seating it. Check for BIOS settinngs for it's socket.
Beyond that I would need to go into Linux to find out what is actually...
Good HDDs are circa 120MB/s. Even the cheapest nastiest SSD is going to get you 4 times that speed. While the fastest SATA SSD is only likely to get your 5 times as fast.
If you had space for 2 SSDs, then you could put both into a striped RAID0 config and get double speed again.
The big...
I installed Proxmox on it and had a play last night. It's not bad. Not as annoying as I thought. A lot easier than VirtualBox.
The container hosting is, well, very minimal. So a "DockerHost" VM is fine.
No need for ECC RAM. While it is a server, it's not mission critical and a bit flip...
Oh dear. First red flag. No RAID during install.
Went digging as to why. The answer...
"We don't think you should use it. Because we use some really stupid O_DIRECT mechanism by default which causes irrelevant miss match between mirrors in garbage sectors."
If I wanted to be told HOW to...
Coming to the end of a rather nice time spend hiding from the high price market with DELL eWaste machines I decided to buy something made this decade.
Going out: Dell Optiplex i7-4490 16Gb DDR3.
Built now: Asus PrimePlus B550, Ryzen 5600G, 32Gb DDR4 3600.
Storage will just move over, but...
2xNVMe 500G or 1Tb Gen3 drives.
If your mobo supports it and you have a free x8 slot you can use a "Dual NVMe riser card".
In windows, create a "new striped volume" and add both drives to it.
You will get one drive in Windows which is the size of both drives, however, data will read and write...
I would email Alphacool. They will know exactly what you mean and may be able to ship you custom pads.
Yes, those pads are critical. Yes they have to accomodate dual sided cards. Mine came for 3080/3090 with 2 sets of pads. The 3090 pads where (in my case Gigabyte Eagle) thinner, but more...
I have a similar setup for cooling.
5800X w/ Kraken 360 rad. 3080 w/ Eisenwolf 360.
The eisenwolf is a beast! Keeps the 3080 under 60*C under the heaviest loads and for "casual" gaming like World of war ships, with VSync enabled the fan profile doesn't even spin the fans up. Silent gaming...
Makes me wanna cry. My 5800X 3080 32gig baller machine barely 8 months old, can now have it's barebones outdone by a £1000 machine. Although the Crosshair heros are still the price of gold.
It depends on what you want. If you want a high end gaming PC your going to be paying through the nose for the likes of GPUs and high end Mobos. However that situation could take years to resolve and it's unlikely the most recent card out will get "cheaper".
If you willing to go a...
I had the sense to go back and have a follow up accident and change from the mATX to an ATX (+£50). Otherwise I would have the 8x m.2 riser and no place to put the SATA 4x card.
