Yep I've been using DO for nearly a year. They've got a decent range of tutorials on their site. The usual advice applies: Make sure you keep the machine updated, lock down any unused ports using a firewall, move SSH off the default port etc. Why don't you ask a kind soul in your devops...

I don't find handling a VPS particularly difficult, and it's great having the flexibility to configure your own box how you want it. I run Ruby/Rails and Node on mine (with Mongodb and Postgresql) for a couple of hobby sites. I've not come across a host that offers this level of flexibility...

Is it a public repo? Have you tried git clone from the command line (i.e git bash)? If it's public, share the address and I'll give it a go for you.

Good to know, thanks. I was siding more towards the 290 based purely on price. Forgot to mention my spec in the OP: it's an i5-3570K at stock with 8GB ram. Just found the original receipt for the 5850 in February 2010. Think I'm due an upgrade :p

I quite like Jekyll. You can host for free on GitHub pages too, which means publishing a post is as easy as pushing to a repo.

You also don't pay if the machine is off, and get charged by the minute. Might be a good solution for a build server that you only use during business hours, as you can script the on/off remotely using Powershell.

If you fancy tinkering with a home-hosted server, you could run a Raspberry PI. I've managed to get Wordpress running on mine. It's not lightening fast, but it is fun :) There was a good guide on arstechnica on running your own web server.

I've used an app before, which I believe was PhotoStreamr (although it was a while ago and I don't use it anymore). Similar in concept to AirVideo, you install it on the machine with the images, point the server component at the files you want visible and install the app on your iPad...

Think I'd agree with that - my Iris Pro only seems to be fine. I reckon there are issues with the drivers, and if that is the case it'll be fixed sooner rather than later. Perhaps try running with the dedicated card disabled (if you can do that)?
