hdmi 2 will work at 144 hz but not at 4k, or work at 4k but not at more than 60hz, limits are much lower for hdmi 1.4 24fps for example display port started with many fewer limitations and had no licensing requirement, now hdmis has nearly caught up they have moved to yet higher specification...

first thing I would try would be to make sure the leads are plugged in firmly both ends and undamaged, movement of plugs, corrosion on contacts and damage to a lead (porbably the dvi) can cause all sorts of disconnect effects
