    New Focus Very Poor MPG

Over the last 18k miles we've averaged 47.9mpg in our 2012 Focus TDCI 125. That's a mixture of town and A roads driven with a very heavy right foot. It does mid fifties if I'm a bit more careful.

Back to work after paternity leave

My son was born in May this year and I had 2 weeks full paid paternity plus a couple of weeks annual leave. Whilst I'm glad of the break by going to work, I only see my son for half an hour or so in the morning, if he's awake and 2-3 hours in the evening plus weekends. Now I don't work...

Do you have seperate money from your wife?

My wife and I both have our separate current accounts that our salaries are paid into, a standing order moves a set amount into a joint account which is used for mortgage, bills, food, eating out etc and into a savings account. I earn slightly more than my wife so I pay a larger amount into the...

    The **Now Drinking** Thread

I'm currently drinking a few drams of Old Pulteney 21 Whisky which is quite special. I love the 12 year old version of the malt but this has taken it up a fair few notches.

The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

I'm fairly new to the world of Whisky and I only started sampling couple of years ago but thankfully being up in Scotland I have access to a fair amount of malts not seen in many local pubs. North Port Brechin 1982 Connoisseurs choice bottled 2008 43%. - I tried this malt on a recent trip to...

Finances and the future - your plans

I currently pay 3.5% of my salary into a nuvos pension scheme and my employer contributes 22.5%. I'm a postdoc research scientist so the pay is not great to begin with (28k rising to 32k in my salary band) but the pension makes up for that. I also save £400 a month into a savings...

Is my PhD supervisor taking the ****?

For my PhD I worked 8.30 to 5.30 Monday to Friday and a couple of hours on the Saturday. The vast majority of this time was spent in the lab as at the end of the day it's your research work that makes or breaks your Doctorate. The last six months of the PhD I was working 8am till 10pm. For all...

Mortgage: How many properties did you look before..

That's what has happened in our town, people are not willing to make the next step up the ladder.

Mortgage: How many properties did you look before..

As we didn't want to move away from the area we viewed a total of 7 houses (small town + not many for sale in 2007). Some of our friends who stay in a nearby city viewed over 40 houses before buying.

What do we all do for a living?

Yeah it's not for everyone but preferable to being stuck behind a computer all day every day! The students are a pain in the bum though.
