My vote always goes to a xonar or a DAC. Creative are buggy hell in a box, and not worth it for EAX. The random buzzing, squeeling, popping and distortion through onboard is clearly noticable even on average headphones/speakers.

If you have no space left for a soundcard why not look at an external USB DAC? Sound quality will be FAR superior even with reasonable headphones. I'm currently running HD650s through a heavily modded Beresford 7520.

Personally I skip 2.1 and go old school 2.0 and get a pair of Audioengine A2 Active's. £125 of pure pleasure compared to most computer speakers.

I've listened to Z-10s before, and frankly the inbuilt DAC is ample for them. You COULD get a soundcard, but why do you want one? The Z-10s won't sound any better. If you're wanting the souncard for inputs/output connectability etc then fair enough, but seems redundant to get speakers...
