Geforce 1060 Upgrade - CPU bound by i5-4570?

He specifically mentioned Elden Ring as an example of a modern game which does not run well on his current computer. Looking at the 'system requirements' for that, it looks to me like his CPU is the weaker link, which chimes with your points. Thanks both for your comments. I think I'll suggest...

Geforce 1060 Upgrade - CPU bound by i5-4570?

That's a good shout. Apparently there is a piece of software he uses which only works on Nvidia cards. I've asked for more information, as this sounds a little spurious to me. What do people think about my original question regarding being CPU bound? It would still be useful to get a feeling...

Geforce 1060 Upgrade - CPU bound by i5-4570?

Thanks. I have suggested that he go with an AMD card, but he has so far stipulated that he wants to stick with Nvidia (I'm not 100% clear as to why, but I think it's partly perceived brand reliability). I will try to persuade him again, however ;)

Geforce 1060 Upgrade - CPU bound by i5-4570?

My friend is looking to upgrade his computer in order to play modern games at 1080p on 'high settings'. He will be upgrading from a Geforce 1060 (6GB I believe) and an i5-4570. He has a total budget of around £800, which would need to cover CPU, graphics card, RAM, storage, case and PSU, and I...

*** The official 2024 MacBook Air 13" and 15" thread (it has the M3 chip, WiFi 6E and everything!) ***

I’ve turned it on, and it’s got a few old messages, but now says ‘syncing paused’.

To be clear, I also have an M1 Mac Studio, so I'm used to the 'modern' Apple machines, but due to a change in my lifestyle I wanted a portable computer as well. My previous Apple laptop never felt as fast as it should have done given the price. I think you're right, because it's now showing...

*** The official 2024 MacBook Air 13" and 15" thread (it has the M3 chip, WiFi 6E and everything!) ***

I ordered a 13" M3 Air (16GB / 512GB) yesterday afternoon, and DPD were knocking on my door at 8:40 this morning! I didn't expect it until next week. My previous Apple laptop was a 2017 13" MBP from the early Touchbar / weird keyboard era (Intel). Observations so far: - They've really...

*** The official Mac Studio thread (it has the M1 Max, the M1 Ultra and everything!) ***

Fair enough, thanks for explaining. When I was coding full time last year, I had two 27" monitors where the left one was a full screen terminal and the right was a vertical split between the terminal and Safari, with virtual desktops for Mail, Slack and one or two other bits and bobs. I found...

Out of interest, what is your monitor set-up and workflow such that you need three monitors? I'm not trying to argue that you don't, I'm just curious, having recently gone from two monitors down to just one again, and not really missing the extra one :)

    Linux on M3 Apple Silicon

Thanks, I've been looking into UTM. I'm tempted to use a spare Raspberry Pi 4 for Linux duties rather than a VM, but we'll see.

    Linux on M3 Apple Silicon

I'd be interested in knowing what hypervisors people are using these days. Back in the (Intel) day, I always used to use VMware Fusion, but perhaps there are better Hyperkit-based options now.

*** The official Apple Vision Pro thread (it has an M2, an R1, loads of cameras, a whopping price tag and everything!) ***

Fair enough - perhaps I've been reading too many Apple-biased sources! :) I will look around at some more. I've been wearing glasses since I was about 8, and I'd like nothing better than to no longer have to*, so the thought of choosing to strap something to my face to get things done is not...

*** The official Apple Vision Pro thread (it has an M2, an R1, loads of cameras, a whopping price tag and everything!) ***

I think that this will be an interesting product to watch. Many people who have tried it, including these early reviewers, seem pretty convinced that it's a viable product which just needs the technology to catch up. However, I think the challenge Apple face is how to convince people who haven't...

What is everyone hoping will be released in 2024?

It doesn't have a keyboard. The clamshell cases aren't very good; I've tried quite a few of them. As Feek also pointed out, it doesn't run Mac OS...

I would also like an updated 11” Air. Imagine one with a better screen and modern Apple CPU :)
