    Maths help!

The curves looks somewhat like an exp(-t^2) function Maybe something like this would work?

    Quick Maths question

a cubic polynomial can never have 4 distinct roots.

What's the hardest mathematical thing you know?

Grobner bases are probably the most complicated thing I've studied at uni, thankfully we have programs like Maple to help out...

Didn't realise the extent that people get ripped off during the Edinburgh Festival!

I've worked in a hostel in Edinburgh for the last two years as a summer job. So many tourists that didn't even know the fringe was on come to Edinburgh and are shocked by the prices. I've heard some hostels charging over £100 per night for their last room!!

    Balloon prank

Remember doing something simliar to a friends room whilst living in halls. It takes a surprisingly lot longer than any of us had expected. Also, I can most definitely recommend using cable ties (or something similar) otherwise you'll have extremely sore fingers afterwards.

    Piece of music name

Hi, Got a orchestral piece of music stuck in my head and can't for the life of me remember what it's called. This is probably not the right key but the notes go C G C D Eb D Eb C G the best way to describe it would be march-like My initial guess was Brahms but I'm really not sure...

    marakesh - what's to do?

I can reccomend going to the Jemma at night, the atmostphere is amazing and it's basically just a massive communal bbq. Other than that, don't go with any "tour guide" to the souks, you will find they're generally on commission from the shops that they take you to.

    6÷2(1+2)

Basically if you do multiplying before diving you get one answer and if you do dividing before multiplying you get another answer. The question is ambiguous and really both answers are correct.

    Maths - Sqrt of i

Up at Edinburgh uni, third (of 4) year. The questions set seem to have a lovely habit of simlifying very nicely, ML Lemma basically making everything go to zero along certain contours. I'm pretty sure the exam will have a relatively nice first question followed by a big integral evaluation...

    Maths - Sqrt of i

No problem, doing similar problems myself at the moments. These evaluation of integral questions are HARD! It's a simple derivation: let z^2 = i (a+ib)^2 = i expand and equate real and imaginary parts. you should get two equations for a and b a^2 - b^2 = 0 2ab = 1 simples.

    Maths - Sqrt of i

    sqrt(i) = sqrt(2)/2 + sqrt(2)/2 * i

    Roots of equations

    It's confusing in the way that you are using a, b, c as the roots of the equations as well as the coeffecients of each term. think of: ax^3 + bx^2 + cx + d = 0 having roots f, g and h: then f + g + h = -b/a fg + gh + fh = c/a fgh = -d/a

    Roots of equations

It's a horrible question in terms of having to factorise it. If there are identities that you can use to avoid factorising I guess it's not too bad. Been a while since I did FP1 though

    Roots of equations

That's a horrible question. Usually there's an obvious root say -1 or 1 which you can use. When there's an obvious root to be found, say a. You can divide the cubic by (x - a) and then factorise the remaining quadratic.

What to do with a load of uni books?

See if you can send an e-mail round first / second year students. They'll happily take them off you if you give them a good price

    Laptop screen

Hi, Got a friend's laptop whose screen isn't working. Everything works perfectly when plugged into an external monitor, and you can hear the laptop boot up and login when using the broken screen. The screen has power going to it, but it remain black. I have tried taking it apart to see...
