This was indeed the issue. Wouldn't boot at all even with the old card after the BIOS update, but a CMOS reset fixed that and I was able to change the setting. Works with the new card now. I've ordered a Gen 4 riser cable which should avoid this in future. Thanks for the help.

This is also a definite possibility, you are correct both that I am using a riser cable and that the cable is only Gen3. Trying a BIOS flash now, but I'll give this a go later when I have time to swap the cards around again. Thanks for the suggestion.

It's an ITX board, there is only one. I think the fact that the old card works fine should rule out any damage on the Mobo side. I've re-seated it a few times, and also the exact same power cables worked with the old card (with the minor exception that the old one only uses a 6-pin connector)...

It would definitely be interesting to see some benchmarks comparing, for example, a 12700k + DDR5 vs a 12900k + DDR4. Or 64GB DDR4 Vs 32GB DDR5. Most people have a finite budget and want to see where to get most bang for their buck.
