Linux Ubuntu 14.4 System build advice please

Hi. All sorted now. Got 3.9GiB showing in System Details. I had a dig around and play with some of the settings in the BIOS "Memory Configuration" and enabled "Hardware Memory Hole" which did the trick. Cheers.

Linux Ubuntu 14.4 System build advice please

Hi. I've installed the 64bit version but it only reports 2.9GiB of memory. The BIOS show 4GiB. I have to say though that this install is far quicker than my first attempt when I was swapping memory and graphics cards. I messed it all up when I installed the PAE Kernel patch. This is for 32bit...

Linux Ubuntu 14.4 System build advice please

Hi and thank you for the replies. I have just completely reinstalled Ubuntu with the ATi AX4870 installed and it's installed the latest Gallium drivers. Strangely though the OS only reports 2.9GiB of RAM present when there is 4GiB installed.

Linux Ubuntu 14.4 System build advice please

Good morning. Let me start from the beginning; I'm a complete Linux noob. I dug out an old system I built for the kids back in 2007 running Wndows XP that had been unused for years. I decided to do something with it last week rather than scrap it. Having discovered the MS have stopped all...

    8gb RAM for Abit IP35-Pro

Hi. After installing CoD Ghosts I find that my old PC needs at least 6Gb RAM to run and I only have 4Gb. I've been trawling for about an hour now without finding a definitive answer to my question below.. Which 8Gb RAM definitely works with an Abit IP-35Pro? I have Windows 7 64bit...

Making LCD monitor works as a photo frame

I've ordered an HDMI to DVI converter cable to see if I can output from a DVD player to the monitor. I hope this will work but I would prefer something less obtrusive than a DVD player if possible. Anybody know of anything? Thanks.

Making LCD monitor works as a photo frame

I've got a spare Samsung Syncmaster LCD monitor which I would like to use as a photo frame but without the use of a PC base unit and keyboard. I know some sort of CPU is required to get the images to output in (S)VGA to the monitor. Is there a standalone device available that will allow me to...

    Ati 4870 or Nvidia GTX275?

Hi straxusii and Ritsugamesh Thanks for the quick reply. I've just come off Ebay where I saw that the ATI 4870 is still fetching a lot more cash than the GTX275. I've just noticed too that the ATi has GDDR 5 memory and the Nvidia GDDR 3. I think the answer was staring me in the face unless...

    Ati 4870 or Nvidia GTX275?

Hi. I've lost track of the latest graphic cards so here's my question. I currently have a Powercolor Ati HD4870 1Gig in my system with everything maxed and pretty in HD on my LG 23" HD TV monitor. My brother has just upgraded his system and he's offered me his Zotac Nvidia Geforce GTX275 896Mb...

    Spec me a tripod please!

Hi. This is well late but I just wanted to add my comment to an interesting thread. I was just about to buy manfrotto but suddenly discovered the Redsnapper range. I got my Redsnapper RS-324 4 Section alloy Tripod & RSH-12 Ball Head yesterday less than 24hrs after ordering it from Joe himself...

    Different wired modem router performance

I have recently migrated from Tiscali to Talktalk and received a D-Link 2640R Modem Router so I swapped out my at least 4 year old first model of Netgear DG834 with latest DG Team 0849 firmware. The D-link worked really well on my fully wired network until after I applied a 24Mbps speed boost to...

    UPS Question

Hi The PC and monitor a definitely plugged in to the battery outlets but it still goes straight off. Is there anything in the bios I should be setting? Cheers

    UPS Question

I've just experienced a couple of rare powercuts which normally I wouldn't worry about as I have a UPS connected to my system. However the power went off and so did my PC. Once the power returned I tested my UPS and found it wasn't supporting my system so believing it to be at the end of its...

    42 inch Plasma?

What sort of environment are you using the TV in? My lad has got a 50" LG plasma at the rear of a big darkish room. I bought a 42" LG LCD after watching it because my TV sits near the window. Plasma is best in a darkened room LCD copes with brighter conditions better. I believe also that LG...

    HDMI cable

You could pay £100 plus. My mate paid £40 for his because he listened to the bull spouted by the youth in D*x*n*. I paid £19.50 for my first one and £6 for my next one, both gold plated but no difference in quality. These are not hi-fi speaker cables which do vary massively in quality. What I...

    Graphics card/Mobo problem

There is a backwards compatibillty issue with some PCIE2 graphics cards and some VIA chipsets, it's a well documented fact. VIA couldn't fix the problem so Nvidia did a bios update for their affected cards. There isn't an issue with ATi chipsets though but I was wondering if there may have been...

    all in one printers

Hi I bought an Epson 3800 All In One a few years back and it still does everything I want including photo prints. They don't make this anymore as they are always improving models. I have bought many Epsons over the years simply because they do what it says on the box, they're reliable and...

    Graphics card/Mobo problem

This card would not install even with a full format and fresh install of Windows on Asus A8R32-MVP-Deluxe motherboard. Windows installation would hang. I've read somewhere that the BFG isn't compatible with VIA chipsets unless the bios are updated. Could the ATi chipset be the cause? I bought...

    Graphics card/Mobo problem

Hello I hope everyone had a great Christmas and wishing you a happy New Year. I was lucky to get an Ati 4870 1Gb from Santa and it easily plays Crysis, CoDWaW and Far Cry 2 flat out. It replaced my old BFG Geforce 8800 GTS 512 OC which I decided to fit into the kids system to give it a...
