Agree with above about signing up for the event. That will be your biggest motivation. The fact you have friends taking part too will help to keep you motivated.

On the holiday the distances covered over five consecutive days will be:
14 miles
10 miles
36 miles
65 miles
43 miles

If you keep increasing the weights but take in as many calories as you eat do the muscles get stronger without getting bigger?
Have I understood what you said correctly or do strength and size always go hand in hand?
Most of the advice I see seems to be geared towards guys wanting to get as big as possible.
I am planning to start weights, but I'd like to get to around the size of a football player, tennis player etc. Rather than the enormous body builder kind of size.

An example I heard a long time ago that helps me remember was:
The fire brigade turn up at a woman's house to get her cat down from a tree it is stuck up.
They manage to get the cat down safely, but then run it over when reversing out of the drive way.
I was there last summer and was told that all the clubs shut down in the summer and all these open air ones spring up, like Hellsmk2 was talking about. So I went around all these open air ones and had an awesome time. I think the city is fantastic.
I imagine the outdoor ones will be closed...
