    mac ibook.. install xp

If it's really an iBook you have, not a MacBook... you can't install Windows. Only the Intel Macs have support for installing Windows, the iBook uses an old G3 processor.

Who is going to use these NXE features?

Will definitely be using install to HDD the 360 dvd drive is stupidly loud. Good to see a lot of people with modded consoles being banned too.

    Spec me an mp3 player

Definitely would avoid the iPod, I've owned 2 iPods (got them free, I wouldn't pay iTax) but they just aren't very good players. Sound quality is poor, iTunes is poor, and they break... a lot. Another vote for the Sony A818 if you can slim down your collection slightly. If not, the Zen X-Fi...

    Dreamhost

As above, while Dreamhost are "OK" to host a small site, the fastest I've ever been able to download a file from sites hosted there is 50KB/s (even slower if 2 people are downloading at once, usually half or less) - not quite sure how they get away with offering "5TB" a month when if you...

    Radeon HD 4870 - Noise?

Yeah cable ties, just to hold the 120mm in place, I'm using a Nexus 'real-silent' 120mm fan @ 7v/680RPM Exactly like in this picture (the picture isn't mine, but the cooler/fan/attachment is the same - hope it's okay to post): My main point still stands though, regardless of heat it's a...

    Radeon HD 4870 - Noise?

I don't have any "hard data" (i.e. numbers), I do however have a 4870 and a love of quiet PCs. The stock cooler, for me, was "OK" at idle but unacceptable (FAR from quiet) under load, luckily I had a spare Accelero AC-S1 r2 and it fits the 4870. ATI 4870 + Accelero AC-S1 r2 + 120mm 600RPM fan...

Vista x64 "hl2.exe has stopped working"

Yeah, this is what I've always had to do with steam games. Most work perfect if running in admin-mode.

IE8, should I start 'fixing' sites yet?

Ah yeah I forgot you could force IE7 emulation via: <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=7" /> Might just stick that in the sites for now, although no doubt there will be some bug with that in the final release causing that to not work properly. Hopefully they'll fix the rendering...

IE8, should I start 'fixing' sites yet?

Hey, When building a site I'm always fussy that it looks as close to identical in all the major browsers IE6/7, Safari 2+, Firefox 2+, Opera 8+ while sticking to XHTML 1.0 compliance, and avoiding 'hacks'. Today I was a little shocked when I downloaded IE8 Beta 1, went to one of my sites which...

    Streaming Media (qt,rm,wmv)

Hey All, I've never dealt with streaming media before, but I have somebody who wants streams setup in rm/mov/wmv formats, since I've never done _anything_ to do with streaming media I have no idea how to do this. Do you need a host that supports the Helix streaming server? I assume you can't...

    Dell XPS1530 Clicking Noise

Which HDD brand do you have? Seagate? I have a few Vostro 1500's with Seagate ST9160821AS HDDs and they all click like you described when it parks the HDD heads (once every few minutes). I find it really annoying and often set it to not park the heads at all by disabling apm on the drive (hdparm...

    Vostro 1700 noisy DVD drive

Yeah I had slight difficulty finding a Vista-compatible version, it seems only the newest versions that come with Nero 8 are compatible. About finding out your screen manufacturer if dxdiag doesn't show it you could try the free stand-alone version of astra32...

    Vostro 1700 noisy DVD drive

I had a really noisy DVD drive with my Vostro 1500 - possibly the same as yours (can't remember the exact model) but it sounded like the laptop was going to break when it was reading a DVD. Originally I used Nero DriveSpeed and set it to 4x read which was a decent solution under windows but...

    Urgent website help

    P1, P2, P3 etc aren't valid HTML/XHTML tags so behaviour across browsers is undefined. You could use a class or id on the <p> tag instead, e.g: <p class="text">Walter Benjamin was a philospher...</p> and in the css p.text { ... }

    glossy screens

It really depends because some are a LOT more reflective than others. I bought a LG 15.4" 1440x900 glossy laptop screen and you'd have to be in very bright place and be displaying a dark colour to get much reflection. However... I bought another one (I don't know what make unfortunately) but...

perfect laptop for linux (best wireless card under linux)

Sorry, I got that wrong I didn't mean bluetooth ones... haven't used mine for a while so I forgot what it was :p. I was using a ATI Remote Wonder which operate via RF / USB Receiver. They go for ~£15 and work well under Ubuntu (and probably most other distros)

perfect laptop for linux (best wireless card under linux)

If you're just wanting a cheap laptop (not 'ultra-portable') for Linux, and aren't worried about OSX I'd avoid the MacBook, you can buy a new laptop with a much better spec a lot cheaper than you'd even get a 2nd hand MacBook. I recently bought for a Vostro 1500 (15.4" 1440x900, T7250, 3GB RAM...

    Mailing Lists / 'Newsletters'

Hey All, I'm doing a small website for a good friends band, among other things he asked for a mailing list. Now... I'm comfortable enough with both C# and PHP to make one in either language, however it is low budget and while I feel I could easily make a basic one day or two (i.e no rich text...
