try amahi. not a distro in itself but sets one up for you as I recall it used fedora but working distro knowledge is minimum as it's pretty much automated.

give something like KDE a try if your after something to offer a kind of transition to linux. You might find gnome a bit much at first :p

still wouldn't use it if it were free. I don't use Linux because I'm too stingy to pay for a windows license.

I haven't used mint but if it's based on ubuntu which I belive it is. then it should include a tool for installing it to usb.

Strange I've upgraded my laptop to 9.10 without issue I also upgraded the other halfs laptop from 8.04->8.10->9.04->9.10 in one afternoon. I've hear people say they have had issues with upgrading but it's something I've never had a problem with.

In the /boot/grub/menu.lst file you will find references to all the current OS's installed you might want to copy the entry to do with booting linux.

Is it a fresh install of ubuntu? 9.10 ships with grub2 afaik
