memtest86 ( found on the linux ubuntu OS installer) can be used during boot stage so doesnt matter if you have windows installed it happens before that gets loaded up.

hello what operating system you running? xp 32 bit? xp 64? reason i ask is that xp 32bit only see's 3 gig at max.(not sure about vista?) if you look at the asus website and search your board ..it will give you a list of ram speeds you can use. like 667mhz 1066 mhzect...pc 5300 pc-8500...

could a memtest86 fail due to the processor? am i rushing into thinking it is the memory?

i tested each stick individually at stock 1066(1067 in bios) 2.1v and each failed on test 5 / memtest86. lots of red failed things started scrolling down the screen i thought best to turn it off. looks like im gonna have to send them back ....with my motherboard that cant see my motu soundcard...

side note: with an asus p5k when you tweak the fsb it alters the memory frequency.
