You're not going to see much improvement on wifi unless you invest in a 802.11ac setup imo. Both AP and client device.

You could use the dedicated media bridge, ASUS EA-AC87, instead of a secondary router, though I went router as I upgraded my existing one and reused the old one as the media bridge. It works better than any usb clients I've tried in the past. Bonus points for having multiple ethernet points...

As a side note, throwing the VM box into modem mode and using your own wifi router might help if it's not all down to the WAN link being crap.
