900/1300 should be fine
I got my HD5870 a week ago and have it clocked at 1000/1300 and plays games fine no crashing ect... had to up the volts to 1275
900/1300 and runs fine. Would need to flash the video card if i wanted to go more.
What would another 100core give me ? another 5% ?
Not sure if i will bother.
After i sold my CF 4850 i got a 9800GT 512meg card for 2 weeks. And it was a big big step down for me. I think for £70 for that card even though it is the 1gig card is a bit to much to be asking for it.
Edit: ok its new so that makes it worth some more. I think i would keep what you have until...
I think their will be an improvement. But i would try and get the 1gig ram cards for gaming at that res, if u can stretch your budget get the 5770.
Have 5750 in crossfire my self. And i went from CF 4850 512 meg cards to the 1gig 5750 in CF and their was a big jump in performance for me.
Reading a post here a few days ago, and x Nvidia guy was saying they run at 55c.
Who knows whos telling the truth.
But looking at Nvidia history of cards i be thinking its going to be hot.
They were using old drivers.

They did another write up that was in November or October which showed them to be even worse (older drivers again). I think with newer drivers its going to get better all the time.
Video card might be overheating. Worth running a program like GPU-z 3.8 or if their is a newer one then run that. Have it log the temp of your card so when it does crash. You just load up the computer and check the temp of the card by looking at the log.
