    Tracing a bad driver?

Seeking a bit of advice on identifying what [I think] is a bad driver. I have a laptop that used to run Windows 8 then 8.1. Periodically it locked up for a few seconds (screen freezing etc.) while any network related tray icon loaded a duplicate of itself. It also resulted in my vpn dropping...

    Firewall recommendations-pls help

A lot of firewalls are having issues because of artificial limits in 8.1. You can sort them out with a simple registry tweak.

    Flash vs HTML5 Firefox

If you opted into google html5 trial on youtube at any time in the past year you'd have found any video dished up in html5 was smoother than the flash alternative. It's the same in chrome. I assume it's either a problem in flash or the fact that it's all handled in the browser i.e. shorter...

    SkyDrive the cheapest?

Skydrive has it's uses, although the 2GB file limit and the fact it actively scans your photos are both pointlessly irritating. Also seems extremely slow at retrieving files e.g. after a clean install it was pulling stuff down at 1.5Mb... Advantage with dropbox is you can (with tinkering) force...

    Skydrive

Indeed, skydrive has it's issues but the rule of thumb has always been encrypt everything before sending anything anywhere if you actually want privacy online. It's possible to set-up dropbox for automatic encryption (with some tweaking), so it's probably possible with skydrive too. At least on...

    Undo Win 8 “Storage Pool”?

Any of the personal folders windows creates can be moved about freely. It really is as simple as changing the location e.g. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/redirect-a-folder-to-a-new-location ....

    Firefox users

For the record the reset firefox function creates a new profile and transfers your bookmarks and cookies to it, then puts your current one in a folder labelled firefox old and drops it on your desktop. It's just easier than the profile manager for the majority of users :) Anyway, if 1 web page...

    Firefox users

There are so many security holes in 14.0.1 (no to mention js performance) that you literally would be better using anything remotely up to date.... As for the op try the beta http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/22.0b2/win32/en-GB/Firefox%20Setup%2022.0b2.exe and if it still...

How to block ads on Youtube with IE10?

Haven't tried it myself, but Trixie is an addon for IE (shows up under tools) - it's basically greasemonkey for IE. You can then do whatever you want with it. Youtube auto buffer is a nice script for removing adds and forcing settings etc.

    Windows 8 Adoption Poor

They're only adding the button because so many people don't realise (and there's a lot of W8 "guides" around with conflicting instructions for the average joe) they can just right click in the same place they always have in the bottom left to access it. The same way they don't realise they can...

AMD 13.4 Catalyst drivers breaks monitor sleep?

Curiously, this bug was also in the 13.2 betas, although it appeared at random nd was very rare. However I got it constantly on 13.5 betas and 13.4, however the 13.4 mobility drivers aren't doing it - which is odd but I'm not complaining! Regardless, the 13.4 cap profiles aren't included in the...

    Asus 802.11ac routers. Any opinions?

Most people just have the rt-n66u with tomato in some form. The rt-ac66u is, at present, just a marketing gimmick unless you have adapters to take advantage of that many bands which you personally don't need and would have to buy in addition to the extra £60 of the base unit cost over the n66...

    Firefox 20 Released!

Most people don't want to watch their downloads come in and the creation of a separate window for them was really a pass down from IE that wasn't needed. Basically 1 click downloads without the clutter Download Status bar used to be one of firefoxes most used extensions. One can only assume...

Can someone explain why my laptop starts up so much faster with Windows 8?

Most of the small changes in W8 got little to no publicity. Many small improvements have a cumulative effect. For example, MS is still developing readyboost. In W8, because your machine is technically running the same session when you shutdown, the cache isn't wiped so you can actually use it...

    Video Editing Software

Lightworks is free (everyone forgets about it) but was in beta the last time I frapsed eve. The free version has somewhat restricted format support now but you could always finish a project then convert it to mkv using one of the many free encoders around. Vegas is more streamlined, but it also...

[Win7 64] Performance optimisation and tweaking?

Ms tweaked a few things when they built W8, however the once with the greatest impact is also the only one you can do by yourself in W7 - disable aero... The only other of any practical use is disabling system restore to save space and frankly for the cost of a couple GB and the trouble it...

iPlayer annoyance (me being a tard?)

Error occurring has been a pain since adobe released the air update that nuked the iplayer. Neither the bbc or adobe have managed to fix it entirely. It's worse on windows 8. Close the iplayer, go to C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Roaming and delete the BBCiPlayerDesktop folder there along with...

    Chrome issues - best alternative?

Of the popular browsers Chrome, Firefox and Opera all push the new standards (in some cases create them) and large open-source projects e.g. WebRTC in equal measure therefore they are the logical options. That said - and I personally have never gotten over my hated of IE since being forced to...

Windows 8 task bar - top always visible

Fyi iplayer desktop has always had a thin white line at the bottom and auto hide has always left a 1/2 pixel line from the taskbar at the bottom of the screen in all versions of windows. The pale blue of w8 is probably more noticeable than the blue/black/transparency of xp/vista/w7 however.
