I should probably be clearer, it's only some WD drives typically the ones I was interested in for this server. To be honest it went over my head so I took the easy option and went for the sammys. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1285254...

Well i've shot myself in the foot. Created a raid5 array in freenas (3x2tb), copied across about 150gb of stuff, added another disk in the server today and it turns out you can't expand it. Looking at moving everything off, rebuilding with ZFS and starting again!

Has anyone tried to get another hard drive in the 3.5" bay underneath the 5 1.2" bay where the molex connectors are sitting? See piccy :)

Been playing with all kinds of settings on the box to see if I could bring up the samba speed, it just occurred to me my laptop doesn't have gigabit lan. doh!

Aye, but in a vmware environment. FreeNAS really is a piece of ****, boot from the CD, choose to install it onto the 160GB drive and your pretty much good to go straight out of the box. Playing around with the RAID config from within the GUI just takes some time to get your head around if...

Guys, I'm going to move the 160gb into the top bay and lay it in there so I can stick another 2tb in the caddy. Anyone done that already? Any advice? Extra molex needed or anything?

Snap,'just kicked mine off shows 7% after about 40mins of plugging away (ewsi / freenas) As I goto sleep freenas is showing 44meg sec across 3'drives and temps stable at 30oc. Could do with pushing some more ram to it and tweaking some of the sus variables but should be done by morning!.

Chaps after some advice. I primarily bought the server as a redundant central storage point, I’ve got about 10-15 old hdds kicking about which range in size from 20gb to 250gb which I’d like to store somewhere and then dispose of. These are literally just sitting on top of a cabinet and haven’t...
