Cheaper MBP, iPod discount and 10-month 0% finance. And I can put the money I'll be saving towards an iPhone 3GS.

Depends how much he carries it around. If it's not a lot then the 17" MBP makes more sense!

So, the low end alu 13", which is now the base MBP has multitouch trackpad? I swear it lacked that before. Happy days.

Even with a slight weight penalty the 17" makes so much more sense than the all-singing, all-dancing 15". And you get a free work-out to boot!

Can i disable the Built-in battery to extend the battery life, so i can use the external power source only?

As an alternative to removing the battery while using in with mains power? Don't worry about it - it's intelligent enough not to cane the battery.
