1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Still unable to use mine due to being on the lookout for a replacement X58 motherboard. If any of you have one I would greatly appreciate it if you popped over to my wanted thread. I want to get overclocking this beastie and replace my aging workstation/secondary PC! (Socket 771 Xeons with DDR2 and a GTX2XX graphics)

The system has been sitting on my floor lifeless for weeks now and I have bumped my thread countless times :(

I get the impression that it won't run on the rev 1 as it looks like it only takes single QPI chips - going by the (incomplete) CPU compatibility list on the gigabyte website for both revs

Ah thats a pity , thanks for looking into it. might see if I can find a cheap board although then it might not be worth it.

Jarrastafari, if your on a 5650 I'd use the 20x multiplier instead of the 22x one.

These are my current settings for a 4.5GHz overclock on a 5670. Been fine for weeks now and I stopped having to do the double boot to get going, that sorted itself out for some reason.

What temp is that running at and using what cooler?

Nice cinebench score :) but isn't that a risky uncore ratio / qpi/vtt combo?
I don't know it looks safe to me. (after all this chip only cost me £57)
Also if I want to get close to 1.3v for qpi/vtt I will need reduce the uncore mult from 16x218(3488) to 12x218(2616) and this way I lose around 5% of performance that is a lot, because it is almost the same like going from 4360MHz to 4150MHz.

Pure disaster today :( noticed only 8GB of my 16GB (4x4GB) RAM was being used/detected in the BIOS and in Windows so I decided to do a little research. I followed the suggestion of loosening the CPU (h70) cooler and also tried changing some BIOS settings as well as testing the sticks of RAM in different slots but now its crapped out and it wont load windows with either default settings or my original overclock settings. Whats the deal?

Edit: tightened the cooler incase it was overheating but it seems what really fixed it was booting into safe mode then restarting, thankfully! Still stuck with only 8GB though :'( anyone else had this problem? This thread suggests fixes but some of it goes over my head!

Usually when ram is missing it indicates bent pins in the CPU socket so I would start there....

thanks Andy, I fo remember looking at the socket when I was putting in the x5650 and wondering if some of the pins I saw were bent, then forgot about them when the system successfully booted.

Can I use a sewing needle to carefully correct them?

Are people having success with Gigabyte X58A-UD3R rev 1.0? I see one person here has, but elsewhere I'm seeing lots of people saying it's not working. :S

Generally speaking (unless you have a DFI Lanparty X58) if a board supports Gulftown (980x 990x) it will support the Xeon, given the only physical differences are as I pointed out (ECC controller, two QPI links).

Unless the board manu has specifically locked out the Xeons (See also : DFI) then as long as your board has support for Gulftown you're good.

The only board I have seen that does not work is the DFI, and I would imagine they did it deliberately because they stuck to the law of the land (Intel).

Cool. Fingers crossed!
