Right, so I'm bored at work and I've decided I need to make some changes to the smoker outside. The door has dropped slightly, which means the seal on the upright chamber isn't great. On the way home I'm going to see if I can get some latches and fire door seal, so I can get a good seal back on it.

Then, I got to thinking. I really wanted a nice fan / temp control unit and had previously looked at the HeaterMeter, which is Pi based but it involves building it, which I can't be chewed with right now, I just want to use the thing and have a nice web UI ( :p ) and all the regular temps etc.

That way I can kick off multiple smokes and manage it remotely. Any ideas?

About to light a chimney starter to make some more afterburner skirt steak. Has been salted and sat in the fridge for a couple of days for the salt to permeate and the surface to dry out a bit. Nom nom.

That should do for my sons birthday over bank holiday weekend:-

You forgot the wet weather gear. :(

That's a good haul though.

Decided to get a cheap BBQ, seems to get ok reviews. But I doubt it'll be any good.

Pricing up a One Touch Premium charcoal bbq with premium cover and chimney starter is about £229 from World of Power (anyone used them before?).

Riverside Garden Centre do it for £253 with 3kg of briquettes and fire lighters...

Are there any other accessories that are classed as "essential" ??

Where do you all get your lumpwood/briquettes from? And what's generaly regarded as better? Lumpwood or Briquettes? (Sainsburys lumpwood is a bit small usually and falls through the grate so will need some bigger lumpwood if I go down that route).

I have about 40 bookmarked recipes ready to use :D

Thanks :)

aussie heat beads are a good start for briquettes.
Get some wood chunks :)

Do I need the wood chunks for as a heat source or is their sole purpose smoking? The Mrs isn't a fan of smoked stuff see :(

Have found everything I'd need (BBQ, Chimney Starter, Firelighters, 4kg of Heat Beads and a normal blue cover) for £215!

Decisions...

I'd like to be pleasantly surprised by that smoker but I also have heard not good things about it.

I'm off work on Friday and am not allowed to go cycling due to needing to rest. I might make some pulled pork or brisket or something. Decisions, decisions.

It's bank holiday Monday as well. May I suggest 72 hour sous vide short rib finished on the BBQ on Monday! ;)
