in case anyone wondering how these xeons compare to skylake I did some benchmarks when I upgrade from x5650 to 6700K.

the clocks are only 12% higher if we subtract that we will get a very good approximation on paint.net, handbrake, cpu-z, and cinebench, on games this will not work obviously. I did bench GTA5 with the 6700K at stock and the fps was exactly the same with 4.7GHz, the GPU was already max out even at stock cpu speeds.

just to point out a few things about the benchmarks I did, both paint.net and handbrake was using all 12 threads of the x5650 to 100% except the (task3) that it is bound to two threads for some reason on both cpu's, as a result the 50% more cores advantage of the xeon was lost and the skylake annihilated it with the far superior IPC.

Also the cities skyline benchmark was a bit flawed(my fault :o) as I only tested with the simulation paused, with the simulation on full speed the difference between the two cpus are much smaller than 47% but I don't know exactly how much as I don't have the my x5650 any more to test it again.

I bench crysis 3 on the level “Welcome to the Jungle” the most cpu demanding map of the entire game.

btw All the benchmark are done with the R9 390 on w7, for both CPUs

Cities: Skylines likes RAM more than cores, in my experience. Upgraded from 6 GB of RAM to 20 GB just for that game.

Do you feel like it was a worthy upgrade nick ? It only seems like 10-15 fps boost for nearly 500 quid in gaming
For gaming no it wasn't worth it, as my 390 OC was already maxed by the x5650 in 1440p in most games. But I did it for paint.net because I use it a lot, and also wanted something new to play (I had the x58 platform from 2009). Also having a strong single thread performance is a plus for many things.

I can see 6 GB of RAM being a problem, but do you really need 20GB for Cities: Skylines? what mods do you use? In my case it doesn’t use more than 7GB ram (and 4.2GB for vram) on a 500K city covering all 25 tiles.

Dunno, I use quite a few mods.

I just bought 16 GB - at the time I wasn't sure if I could re-use my existing RAM (due to having a triple channel motherboard and them having potentially different speeds/timing) and there was obviously no point buying 8 GB. Turned out I could re-use 4 GB of my existing RAM, hence 20 GB total.

What BClk, mem speed / timings were you running on the Xeon system? I've found on my x5650 that scores increase substantially with higher Bclk and triple channel mem at 1700+MHz 7-7-7-20-1T. In fact, in handbrake the Xeon at 4.4GHz is actually 10% faster than my 4770k at 4.5GHz with DDR3-2133. I dont play games but I imagine it would have a large effect here also.

Bclk 210MHz, ram triple channel 1260MHz 8-8-8-20-1T, that was the best I could do in order to keep it 100% stable, my ram was rated for 1866 11C, but the ICM was to weak to get the ram so high 100% stable, probably my x5650 was below average but still be able to get 4.2GHz no problem.

So, anyone going to put a 1070/1080 into their system? :D

I have SLI 970s at the moment but if I can sell them and get a 1070 for less than 100 quid net I'll be doing so. Will report back...

Very interesting that you have a 500mhz difference and in some of the more GPU intense instances recording only around a 10% increase.

Any chance of downclocking to 4.2 and rerunning the 1440p metro test? :)

I don’t think will make any difference as the 390 was already maxed at 1440p on metro, on gta5 that I did test it with the 6700K at stock(4.2) the fps was exactly the same because the GPU was maxed.

Just found this thread after I had a sudden realization that I can upgrade to a newer Gen Xeon to replace my i7-950!

I have a project in the logs (Project: TJ07 Revived, shameless plug :p) and have just bought a 2nd Asus Geforce GTX 980ti Strix OC and wanted to upgrade my CPU to reduce any bottlenecking...I have a fully custom watercooling setup.

Could anyone tell me which of the Xeon's generally overclock and perform the best over a i7-950? Is it worth getting a X5670 for example over a X5650 even with the price difference?

My current spec is in my sig

I have an X5670 the only thing is has over the X5650 is a higher multiplier so you might be able to squeeze a bit more out of it....
