Hi, strange question this (maybe)

I thought you could just stick a DVD disk in your computer and windows media player (11) would play it, obviously not as I just tried it with a learn to play guitar DVD i was given at xmas I just put in my DVD drive on computer and nothing, even in my computer it says "please insert disk" now i know the disk works as I can play it on my dvd player in the lounge.

So what FREE dvd player software can i get and where from please. Just as I have my computer in a kind of spare bedroom with my guitar/piano etc .

thank you

Or am i missing something obvious ?

okay just stick a gone in 60 seconds DVD in computer and that came up but gave some "please change display settings etc" box.

I dont expect all this rubbish, i just want to put my "learn the guitar DVD" ;) in my computer and it starts. End of.....

all this faffing about...

Right, WMP11 works fine now with all my other DVD's, so It must be this DISK, and only this disk, I believe it is from the USA, cannot explore the drive when the disk is in it. The DVD play's fine on my dvd player in the lounge. so must be something odd about the disk itself....

When I put this DVD in the computers drive, and i choose explore etc, all i get is Please insert disk.

How odd

your right, but i can change the region on my computers drive from 2 (UK) to 1 (USA) which I have done and it made no difference. Only can do it 3 more times as well on that drive, for some reason the NEC 4550 only allows you to change regions 5 times ?

They are all like that. It was originally to stop people changing the region whenever they wanted to watch a DVD from a different country.

You tend to be able to get modified firmware for the drive that either resets the counter, or makes the drive Region 0 (or Region Free).

So if i get some modified firware for the region do you think that may work then ? as even when i changed from regione 2 to 1 it still did nothing, i didnt reboot pc though....

I shall have a look around for something region free. Just seems off I cannot even explore that drive though.

thanks for your help thus far

I thought one of the big plus points about VLC was that there is no need for these dodgy codec packs.
Yup, VLC has all its own codecs. It shouldn't need any codec packs. Any other media progs such as WMP would benefit from the codec packs but VLC has its own so no need to install them.

Tried all these and STILL nothing is being picked up, Is it possible for a DVD to be made that is not possible to be played on a computer only a stand alone DVD player. ?

So odd. Even in My computer, it comes up just as a empty drive when i put that DVD in, other DVD's are fine though.

I wonder if it is some form of copy protection, seems strange if it is though. Its only a guitar tuition DVD anyhow.

it is a DVD as it plays fine in my DVD player in the lounge. My computers DVD player works fine as all my other DVD's work fine on that. So it is the disk, something about it. perhaps a copy thingy 'Ma jig ?
