What is it that smart ass?
Mutation, until it becomes desirable and then infiltrates most of the species then it become evolution. This isn't evolution as most ducks with 4 legs die very quickly even in captivity and as of yet haven't provided any advantages over 2.

Yes... Of course, beneficial mutations that create a group of 'fitter' creatures are one of the percieved driving forces of the proposed evolution mechanism....

Perhaps it's a little early to say it's evolution yet, but it could certainly be considered a potential step towards something else, if indeed it was allowed to continue and showed positive effects.

And who's to say perhaps in a million years ducks will have evolved into 4 legged creature.

'Could' being the major word here. Just because one mutation survives and breeds doesn't mean that all of it's successors are going to be born with 4 legs from now on.

Evolution takes a massive amount of time, so much so, the only way we can record the changes is by fossils. We certainly won't see a change in the ducks' evolution path in our lifetime, or our childrens' lifetime etc.

That's just being pedantic. Evolution is the result of mutation and, you're right, this duck will probably die. However, the human idea of more legs/arms/ being beneficial (running faster, groping more breasts) may not be scientifically accurate but it is a jovial idea that most people think of when seeing such mutations. Hence the relevance of the title.

Cleanbluesky is a clever bloke and I'd bet he knows plenty about mutation, so your rolleyes is not very appropriate. ;)

mutation is direct evidence of evolution, simple as that, and here we actually have some evidence of mutation and thus evolution. *Keeps looking out telescope for celestial teapot* :p

PS: This obviously isnt evolution in what some people think of it, im not saying all ducks from now on will be born with 4 legs, if someone pipes up saying 'its not evolution' then your not taking my point in the way its ment ;) im jus sayin its clear evidence on genes, genetics, mutation and obviously this supports the very core basis of the theory of evolution.........this is a random mutation in a duck, poor lil guy, least he shouldnt fall over :D
