http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...=Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2 VGA Cooler

Put one of these on my 4870 today. Bit fiddly to do but well worth it and you only need to add either a 92/120mm fan with cable ties (I used a Xilence 120mm which is silent: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-000-XI). CFM is 44 not 68 as the webpage states but that is still good enough.

All the ram heatsinks are included however 1 is partially obstructed by the heatpipes on the cooler but you can twist it around then when you tighten the screws up it kind of holds it over 95% of the surface area (all of the other 7 heatsinks fit perfectly). The strip heatsink for the VRMs you can only use 1 screw to attach it and then have to use something else on the other end as the hole is not aligned (I choose a high tech material-Blutack!!).

Stock Temps before:
Idle 79-82C (depending on air temps)
Load 86-92C (depending on air temps)
Stock fan speed was only around 24-26% on load and 14-19% idle (depending on air temps). This was very noticeable to me as my other 4 case fans are silent and the 4870 gets quite loud under gaming unless you have your volume up really loud you may hear it. When I noticed it started to get bothered so had to do something about it plus lower temps are always good.

Temps with Accelero:
Idle 42-48C (depending on air temps)
Load 52-61C (depending on air temps)
Massive gains and never goes above 61C no matter what plus it is silent.

I will overclock it now as there is obviously a lot of headroom (I know the GDDR5 can hit 4400) and it is still running much cooler plus case temps have dropped by 4-6C so its all good.

Reckon it can get close to the GTX280 @ stock speeds but obviously the extra £££ spent means that it is only £30-40 cheaper overall although I suppose with the lower power useage its much cheaper to run!!

Will let you know later as not had a chance to try it yet. But on 3Dmark01 got an extra 3000 points on stock clocks so not sure what is going on there (is it better thermals means no throttling or something else which accounts for the gain). Also got small gains on stock again with 3D marks 03 + 06 but 05 lost 3000 points so really need to see what is going on before pushing it!!

Its what i did with mine to last month.

what ive done since with the bottom ramsink is twist it and bend a fin with plyers, fits perfect, this pic was before i did it.

People say to use the 4870 cooler backplate, but i couldnt get the accelero on with it. A bit of it caught.

Excellent post m8. Did it improve your overclock?
I can get 790/1090 (1st time overclock with this card) but have not tried to push it any further yet. Temps still do not rise above 66C which is excellent as still almost 20C cooler than the stock HSF.

The results below also include my older (now sold) 975X mobo & X6800 so everyone can see what performance difference it makes upgrading from 975X PCI-E 1.1 to X48 PCI-E 2.0 slots (less than 5% although I do not regret it as I have the ability to overclock my CPU FSB a lot more). Also the difference between my old 8800GTX and the 4870 as well as the effect of upgrading the CPU on X48 mobo from X6800 to Q9450.

Turbo Module ?

Thanks for the pix and comments. I want to do the same to my new Sapphire 4870 and so I wonder if you could take some "after pix" to show us the fan mounted and the heatsink that you've "adjusted" if it's not obscured by the cooler.

Did you consider the twin turbo add on bit or is a single 120mm good enough ?

Thanks

I'm thinking of getting one of these ordered next week.

What Thermal paste should I get? And will tie wraps do for the VRM heatsink?

Also to clean the crap paste from the stock cooler is it ok to use alcohol swab things for the core and ram?

I wont need to buy any extra metal or anything to stick the ram sinks on will I?

The only reason I am getting one is so its quieter, thats about it, I doubt it will help me get better overclocks since temp appears to not be limiting me at the moment, unless someone can say otherwise?

Thanks.

Have your case temps been effected at all since the heat is not being vented out of the back of the PC?
Yep gone down around 10C as there is nowhere near as much heat being generated by the 4870 now as it is currently idling around 44C today vs 80C on the stock cooler!!

The heat not being blown out the back of the case is helped by the much lower temps.
