Hi Guys,

Looks like my launch day PS3 Slim 120Gb has given up the ghost and unfortunately it just lapsed out of the extended warranty I bought too (ended at start of month :()!

Looks like its the BD drive thats at fault (sometimes reads BDs but doesnt play them, makes a noise when you insert/remove the BD) and gives some error message that I cant remember off top of my head.

So looks like I either try and see if the warranty company will deal with it (will call them tomorrow) or I replace the BD drive (any recommendations where I can get one and how to find out what BD drive it is in my PS3?) or just buy a new one either in the shops or second hand.

Bit annoying with FIFA 13 out tonight!

Hopefully the warranty company will be kind to you, I'm sure you'll be able to get it repaired/replaced if you offer to take out another 12 months worth of warranty as well. :p

Doubtful - but lets see. Trying to work out how easy it would be to replace the BD drive, cant think its that hard...

Yeah looks like its a CECH-20xx PS3 model which needs a BD450 with BMD-051 daughterboard, capable of driving KES-450A laser and KEM-450AAA slide. About £45 it seems...

The answer was obviously NO - just glad it took me seconds to find out :p. Now to find a cheap PS3 deal, though tempted to wait for the Super Slim and see how that affects the Slims price...

have you tried a lens cleaner, you can get ones on ebay for the ps3s slot drive for about £5ish could be worth a try if its having probs reading discs as it might be a build up of dust. Read somewhere a while ago that BD lens/laser are a bit more sensitive than normal cd/dvd ones.

Yeah Ill give it a fiddle now Ive ordered a new one from Amazon. At worst Ill try and use it as a media streamer somewhere - also Ive got a very healthy amount of PSN games so its not like its a dead PS3.

It was on its last feet though tbh as I had a file system error only a week or two before where I lost everything on the HDD, so made sense to get it fully replaced.

Well that was a fun trip and somehow Ive broke even (kind of :p)

So basically I bought a PS3 Slim 320Gb from Amazon which ended up being faulty, couldnt swap it for another one as they were discontinued so I eventually got them to refund me the cost of just the PS3 so I was back to square 1 with a broken PS3 Slim :(

Decided to hunt for another Slim but that proved expensive and Im picky regards second-hand or getting the Super Slim, so decided to fix my old one so I ordered the KEM-450AAA laser and mechanism rather than the BD-ROM itself (worked out £25 in all) and spent just under 2 hours putting it and cleaning my PS3 Slim out (it needed it!).

And the result is a working PS3 Slim! :D. Well its been working for 30mins so we will see, I still needed to replace the HDD as I suspect thats on its last legs - got that covered by putting in my MBP HDD drive as Im sticking a SSD in that now :). Bonus!

I have physical dismantle a few ps3 blu-ray drives and cleaned the lens with ear bud and epa.. and they all seems ok after. Also its possible to purchase just the lens for the drive too.

Its worth a try if your handy with a screw driver, if its a drive motor issue; its more than likely the whole drive is needed.

Yeah looks like it was a lens issue so I just replaced the whole lens and mechanism, the PS3 was 3years old so for the cost it wasnt too bad at all. I didnt think to clean the lens as I tried the youtube videos just to recognise the disc let alone play it - anythings better than forking out for a new whole PS3...

try a dvd mate.. the ps3 have a different lens for the dvds/cds to blu ray.. this will check if it is the lens. I've also seen it when the lens itself as jam into a position and just needed to be moved to start working again.

I'm quite lucky, I have a family ran electronic shop in the city center than is more than prepared to order in weird and wonderful parts. I changed a tape head for a mate on his sony walkman a few weeks back.

[edit] opps.. I see you already fixed it... I was skim reading this at work.. :)

just had my ps3 give me the same prob - it would red CD (ps2 games) and dvds fine, but not ps3 games or blu-ray movies. would spin up, stop spin up, stop, eject, spin up etc.1 in 10 chance it would reconize the ps3 game but would either gove 80010514 error or stick on the game loading screen.

took it all apart last night - to check what laser was in it at the same time give the 2 laser lens a clean with a cotton bud started working again.

Hopefully it stays working - but if not. ps3ud0 were did you get your laser unit from - seen a few on ebay for about 25ish (mine needs the 450D)

Yeah I had the same thing, but mine was more permanent, it would go straight to 8001054 error even if I tilted the console (as per some silly advice on Youtube) to get the BD to be read - I totally forgot to check DVDs, but at end of day Ive got the PS3 for BDs. I might have fixed mine with a simple clean, but the issue was compounded by the fact the file system was playing up so why I originally replaced it with a new PS3...

I bought my laser from ConsoleParts4U, (I just dont trust ebay, especially if something doesnt work and you need support) which seems to get some good reviews (they seem to supply the parts to those ebayers and amazon market place people). They arent great on picking up the phone, but will always return a call so that gave me some piece of mind double checking exactly what laser to get.

Not had any issues with it since it was fixed neither, though I swear the last PS3 firmware has made my PS3 more sluggish!
