I know there are a few people on here with Vinyl setups, and questions often come up so thought it was a good idea to have a dedicated Vinyl thread.. so, post your setups, questions, useful links etc all here.

Useful Links:

http://www.vinylengine.com - great resource for information and specs on all things analogue.

http://www.discogs.com - Probably widely known already, but a great Vinyl resource.

http://www.vinyltap.co.uk/ - Good resource for rare records.

My current setup consists of:

Thorens TD160
A&R P77 cartridge
Audio Technica AT1120 Arm

Running through a Technics SU-7300 Amp:

and currently a pair of Mission 73S Speakers (next item to be upgraded, any advice on anything suitable to match the above appreciated)

Snap, almost. Nice vintage gear you have there.

This is mine.

Thorens TD 160B
Shure M75ED Type 2 catridge & Jico SAS stylus (also have an ortofon VMS20E MKII, an empire 999X/EX, a Linn K9 and an Audio Technica AT-30e with no stylus)
SME 3009 Series 2 improved arm

running through a Luxman L-220 amp

and Tannoy super red monitor 10B's

Can't say what's best for you with speakers but having listened to KEF chorales, celestion ditton 25's, Spendor SP2/3's, JBL control 1's, harbeth P3 ES2's and these tannoy SRM-10B's I chose the tannoys. There is something unique about the sound that i assume is down to the horn loaded dual concentric design that i love. The others were all brilliant in their own way, particularly the Celestions and the Spendors.

Kei, how do you find your TD160? I hunk it sounds excellent, but it's sensitive to people walking past it.. I think it's because I've got it mounted on a cabinet just on the carpet and the suspended design struggles when anyone walks past it.

LP12 owner here.

Secret with most decks, especially suspended desks is what you place them on. The general convention is a light rigid table, or similar wall shelf. Worst place is big heavy cabinet, the mass acts as and energy store from external vibrations (the music playing for example) and releases it into the deck. This will dramatically reduce the amount of information and detail the stylus can retrieve from the record groove.

The Thorens sounds excellent, though mine needs to be double checked with a stroboscope as it's running slightly fast. (reckon it's down to suspension and motor azimuth) Mine was reasonably good with footsteps prior to moving it onto the top of my flexi rack unit. Since then i have to tip toe whilst it's playing, not entirely a surprise seeing as it's just over a meter high and very heavy.

That LP12 looks excellent.. what amp and speakers are you using with it?

I could do with a new mat for my TD160, it has the original rubber one which I'm not a fan of.

There as defiantly been a resurgence in Vinyl sales over the last few years, mainly due to the "loudness war"

There is something satisfying about opening up a vinyl record and playing it that you don't get with digital media.

:D
LP12 with Afromosa fluted plinth I’ve refurbished and French polished, running a Keel sub chassis and Cirkus bearing, Trampolin 2 base, Radikal power supply and motor, with on board Urika phono stage fed by a Ekos2 arm and an old Lyra Evolv99 MC cart……. It’s bit of a “triggers old broom” now as over the past 20-25 years I’ve upgraded from what I original bought new. (It started life as a black Ash, Valhalla psu Akito K18 deck)

Hooked up to Linn Klimax electronics and PMC Fact 8 speakers.

My old man has a Thorens TD160 and also had the same problem as you guys, people walking even gingerly nearby while it's playing caused it to jump around all over the place. I saw something called Acoustifeet for sale from a dealer over on hifiwigwam, he recommended some soft ones at the cost of about £5 - it hasn't jumped once since.

Lol not really but they never disappeared totally. There has always been a market for them, albeit much smaller than before CD came along.

I see. Though my memory honestly can't compare to whats posted in this thread but I can't say I had good experience from vinyl.

It was one of those all in one sets from the early/mid 80s. Hi-Fi unit was all wood with metal front plates and the clear cover for the player/arm. Think the radio had the glowing green screen and the arm seeking dial for the radio?

However, my memory of vinyl was a lot of crackling. The last time I ever remember playing one was 1989 or there about.

A lot of modern releases are coming out in 180g vinyl records which are MUCH better quality recordings to the old 70/80s stuff. However saying that I actually quit elite the crackles you get between tracks and at the start of records.

With an analogue vinyl recording you get a lot more dynamics to the sound (search in youtube for loads of examples). For example I just received Wasting Light by the Foo Fighters today (double Vinyl, 180g) and comparing it against the MP3 files it's a world of difference, you can pick up a lot more detail on the vinyl version.

Here is a good video describing the Loudness War and dynamics:
