£1,000 to spend on first car ...

Ford Ka really for first car. Dirt cheap parts and not a boy racer machine. Rack up a couple of years before looking at "hot" hatches (I don't think that term should be used anymore but anyhow...). Your mates may smirk but it won't be costing you the earth! Save the dough for living it up IMO

Well, had a chat to my friend at work, he gets his insurance done by a mate who works at an insurance brokers, so he gets it dirt cheap and can sort me out, and he said he'll do up to 1.8l cars for me, for silly cheap money fully comp, so i could just get a nice car for £1,000 now and not worry about insurance.

Still got to worry about death though and I would think you're even less likely to get a "nice car" for £1k than you are a sensible first car.

I'd just go on autotrader and put in max of £1200 within 50-100 miles of your postcode and browse for the best condition car there.

Locally to me a 2.0 406 glx would be what I would go for assuming insurance was ok.
