Hi,

Well I have a uni mate who has got a 1.8 Focus. So far he has done the usual ST170 air intake bits with k&n panel filter. So that bit is sorted. Is there any fairly cheap ways of increasing the power of it?

I seem to recall something said about putting the 2.0 Zetec cams into the 1.8 for a boost of power? Plus maybe use the 2.0 throttle body? Anyone have more info on that?

Well really he wants the best performance to price ratio things to do. In otherwords what's worth doing to a 1.8 Focus without going mad.

You can put 2.0 cams into them and it will increase power but the 1.8 is a bit more responsive than the 2.0 and for the increase in power it's really not worth the money.

Does he just have the st snorkal and air box or is it the whole system? ST manifold will bolt on with a tiny bit of modifications and will give you better low down torque. Anyhting after that seems to get pricey, i have my 1.8 going in for a decat and hopefully stage 1 cams (crower) .But after having all the breathing mods done, things seem to get into the £300s £500's after that :( .

1CE,

Just got the 2.0 auto air deflector, st170 snorkel, st170 air box. How much modification do you have to do to fit the ST manifold? Plus I noticed how cheap 2.0 cams seem to sell on ebay... Worth putting on the larger throttlebody on at the same time?

The 2.0L cams are definitely worth while. These are essentially the same cams used in the 130 bhp 1.8 which came in some Escorts, but you'll need the ECU and throttle body that goes with them.

Heya,

For the ST170 Manifold you'll need to bend the dipstick as it touches the st manifold, but for the sake of £8 or so you can buy the st one to solve that problem, the power steering pipe will laos need to be moved out of the way, but shouldn't really be a problem, the only other parts would be to heat wrap it and sort the flanges out, but you could get around that buy getting a whole st exhaust system including the cat/decat. As for the throttle bodies and 2.0 cams i'm not too sure.

Hope this helps :) .

i take it the 2.0 inlet stuff is the same as the 1.8 etc but larger bores, is that right?

if so, wont you be losing air velocity in a big way? do the zetec heads gain much from gasflowing?

The 1.8 and 2.0 heads, valve sizes and inlet manifolds are the same AFAIK

And yes, you have to do quite a bit of head work to get good power out of a Zetec. They aren't really that great an engine in stock form compared to e.g. the Mi16 or C20XE.

do zetec heads have pent roofs like the vauxhall unit?

Yes, but with smaller ports and valves and a narrower valve angle IIRC. The Zetec is a much closer match to the newer Ecotec engine. You can get good power out of both of them, but it takes more work.

Turbocharge it? Plenty of lads run the older 1.8 and 2.0 Zetec's with a turbocharger for power round 210bhp. Can be done on a DIY budget but will mean using older Fiesta RS Turbo management etc.
