Looking for a sensible motor, for about 4k.
Top of the list seems to be a Ford Focus, 2002-04, 5dr 1.8TDCi Ghia or Zetec.

Anyone got any experience of these cars?

Well I believe thats the same 1.8TDCI that my Dad's mk4 mondeo has; it certainly seems powerful enough to hull it along so I'm sure it would be even better in a smaller focus - oh and as an added bonus my Dad manages to average 55mpg...

In the focus they seem to do 2 variants, a 100bhp and a 115bhp.
Any differences? Other than 15bhps and 1sec on the 0-60?

Depending on the mileage you're likely to do, you might be better off with the 1.6 petrol which is a decent enough engine.

i had the 100ps focus and it was still very good averaging around the 52mpg mark, i added a power box to mine (forget the exact name) and it took power up to around the 140Bhp mark with torque at 285lbs claimed.

Completely different engine in the Mk1 focus. The mk4 mondeo has the PSA developed engines which share nothing in common with the Ford devleloped engines in the Mk3 mondeo and Mk1 Focus.

The 1.8 is pretty good though, reliability is good - it's only when you get into the 2.0s that you start to get problems
