Just thought id pop in as im wondering about somit.

I know next to nothing about how cars work but i would like to drive one. I have roughly £1000 coming soon and wondering if anyone reckons i could learn to drive and get a very cheap car just for shopping and visiting local family for around £1000 or would it cost a lot more?

Worried about my knowlage of cars too as most ppl know a lot about cars and i just know pretty much squat so if anything breaks im screwed and id probs not know if a fault was developing.

Car wise, somit small i reckon and cheap to run and insure etc and actual cost would be £100-200 or less. Maybe a 50 quid metro :p

Thoughts?

There is almost no way at all you can learn to drive, pass your test, buy a car, and then insure and run it for a year with £1000.

I reccon you should do a crash course and learn to drive then worry about the car later :)

Didnt say run it for a year with £1000. Just learn, and get a car and be driving with £1000. I would have to pay fuel and tax/ins when i can etc tho im not sure about how id last with tax and insurance etc i mean i duno prices i mean how much would a short duration cost to get it on the road running for say first 3 months or something?

I still dont think this is possible.

Car is what, 500 quid+ for one that isnt going to be a complete nail that costs its purchase price in repairs every 30 seconds. Driving lessons, say 20 if you are not an idiot at £20 an hour so £400. Insurance, new driver, no NCB, over £500..

Im sure with my brothers help i could get a car under £200 or £150. I want the basic of basics car just somit id use for shopping and visiting family locally. Nothing flashy no gimicks can look real boring for all i care. Driving lessons i think can be had for £15 ph.

Thanks for the replies so far i know its a long shot but well thats why im here askin in hopes someone has had a similar budget and managed it or find ways to cut the cost down to my budget. Still just a passing idea.

Driving lessons for £15 ph?

Sure, if you teleport back to the year 2000! And a £150 car is not going to last 5 minutes. I sold a completely and utterly broken, rusted Mondeo without an engine for £170!

Motoring, even on a budget, can cost quite a bit of money. Without cutting serious corners then I really dont think you have enough money to learn to drive and buy a car.

Ah well, worth a shot to think about its just i doubt id have this kinda money for a very long time. Thought if any time was the right time, this would be it. :(

I have to agree with Fox, I got my first car for free because it was half broken, fixed it up (which didn't cost a lot, mates rates) and even so for my first 6 months driving it probably stung me £1500+ once you looked at insurance, fuel, tax etc. etc.

That's without even thinking about driving lessons, the ever more expensive theory and practical tests and so on.

If £1k is so much to you that it isnt something you'll have again for a long time or can easily save then you really need to think hard about whether motoring is affordable :(

Dont have to be rude about it dude.

He's not being rude, just blunt..

These are what you need on a car to drive it on the road..

Tax ~ £120-200 a year, depending on the car (typical prices for the older cars you'll be looking at)
Insurance ~ £1000+ a year for a new driver
MOT £55 I think, plus any repairs for it to pass the MOT. An MOT is a test done by a garage, it lasts for a year and it's to make sure the car is safe to you and others

Car £??

In your position, I'd just pay to do a crash course, basically take a week off work and spend the time at a crash course centre. They teach you to drive, non stop for a week, with a driving test at the end. You'll miss out on some road experience, but you'll have your licence. At a guess, they cost £500

Just for lessons, test and a nail of a car, sure 1k is possible, not entirely likely but possible.

But what good will it do you without insurance?

+Fuel
+Tyres
+Servicing
+Repairs

As a new driver the insurance is going to be the main cost, and that will very likely blow your budget before you even start (assuming you are fairly young).

For this reason alone you will not be able to run a super cheap nail. I could do it because I can A-Team pretty much anything back together with ropes, nails and bits of wood. You can't do this so your car wouldn't last five minutes sorry.
