1000 watt power supply and going to uni

Anyway, if I were you, just to be safe, I'd sell your 1000w PSU and buy a smaller one, unless you really need 1000w.

swapping it for a lower, simlar model wouldn't make a difference to how much power is used.

the PSU will only draw the power it needs, so if you are using 400W, then a 600W and 1000W PSU will still draw the same amount of power. Althou the 1000W would have a slight advantage as it wont even be operating at half load

Advantage? PSUs always draw more from the wall than the load they are supplying and end up wasting the extra as heat, since they are not 100% efficient. They are less efficient at very low loads e.g. under 20%. The OP's system is likely using under 175W idle and 450W maxed out. At such low levels a typical 1000W PSU would be less efficient than a 600W unit and draw more from the wall (75% vs 85% eff @ 175W load = approx 27W extra at the wall).
 
i dont know the power usage of the GPU, but assumed it would be abit more than 175W considering its a dual card.

PSU's at 50% is usually thier most effiecent
 
always wondered by what process that PSU's have a max efficiency range?

like revs/torque on a car engine lol
 
Only skim read but I think it seems that everyone is failing to relise that the psu does not draw 1000w from the wall. Secondly it doesn't use 1000w if the pc is only needing 400w. Thats the total amount of power it can produce, not what it is always producing.
