Question to the side, but why do some people have an inability to save things for a rainy day?

I can sometimes understand if it's to do with tax etc., but by and large doing the above would be the most prudent course of action. You'll get to six months later when a laptop needs repairing etc., and a nice wad of cash would be helpful.

I completely agree. I've spent the last few years scraping by due to a new house and kids so I've become accustomed to not spending money in the way I used to. I've recently managed to put some money aside and almost splurged it on a luxury. But I'd rather keep it for a rainy day. So I've decided to save some of it and invest a part of it instead. It will be fun making investments and even if it doesn't work out I'll still have some spare for emergencies if they happen.
