looking at buying a 106 gti as i like the look of them, but never test drove one, are they good on fuel/fun to drive etc?? Im coming from an mg zr 1.4 and a vx220 to one of these, just wondering if they are worth the money.

LOL, nah i have got a problem with the Vx220, a damaged chassis for which im trying to claim my money back for the car. I'm migrating to Australia next year, so dont wanna spend big money on a car and i want something cheap and cheerful. I have always liked th elooks of the 106 but haven't had the pleasure to drive one.

And lol yes i'll certainly have more room over the VX. :)

Fairly heavy on fuel for what they are, at least mine is anyway.
If you are going to buy one, buy a low as possible milleage example, as they tend to fall to bits after 80k.
Good fun to drive and decent performance. Some people find the seating/pedal posision weird, although ive never really noticed it myself.
I wouldnt recommend them for motorway mile crunching and I wouldnt expect fantastic reliability.

how heavy are we talking here? My zr does around 30 MPG, the vx220 did 35-40MPG on a motorway and around 20-25 on the streets..

Why is it no good for motorways? Noise/rattles or just performance wise?
Any common problems to watch out for?

To be fair, almost all my driving is around town, so its stop start and it seems to drink the juice, never really worked it out properly though so it may be better than I think. It shouldnt really be an issue for you.
Its not too bad on the motorway, but if your using it a lot I would recommend something else, its got the power to cruise/overtake, but crusinig around 70mph is fairly high up the rev range in 5th gear.

ABS sensors tend to die, the rear torsion bar/trailing arm bearings can go which gives play in the rear wheels which will fail the MOT. Knocks and clunks from the front end are quite common, which can be any number of things.

I've got a Saxo VTR which is practically identical to a 106 and they are not good motor munchers.

I found I had really pains in my back due to the offset pedals.

I'd expect low to mid thirties on mpg. My VTR usually gets about 40mpg and i hoon around in it. The VTS/Gti have a combined of 37mpg I think.

Nice cars, I'd get a 306 GTi-6 though tbh.

Ive always wanted one of these, but they seem to go for quite abit of cash considering the mileage on the cars and the age of them.

Kinda puts me off.

Yeh, 306 GTi-6 is a better prospect.

Just 30mpg max and not as sharp handling but better performance.
Not really, its a completely different prospect IMO.

Not so much a B-road funwagon™, but more of a decent handling main road car.

Plus 30MPG max, I doubt that low TBH, if I can average 40MPG from Manchester to Southampton in the LCR I'm positive you can beat 30MPG from a 306 GTI-6.

I know......a 306 GTi will not do much more than 30mpg on a motorway journey.

They are known to be heavy on fuel, just ask a few members that own them.

I doubt your engine is 10-15 years old either tbh.

:)

LOL, I can get that out of my Impreza.

Quite fancy a 106GTI for my GF for knocking about town in. Would love another 205 but they are a bit too long in the tooth now and she hated the last one without power steering.

Great handling, good on fuel (unless you thrape it), not a bad looking car and quite cheap nowadays.

Pedals are close together but thats never been a prob for me, i have the half leather/suede seats and they never hurt my back.

You dont see to many about which is nice, especially in sundance yellow :)

that does look a pretty cool colour, never seen that on the roads!

To the people who prefer the 306 - personally i'm not a fan of the larger shape, prefer the little 106 version myself.

Seems there's a few owners here, is there an official GTi site/forum? And i take it the owners have had no major problems? I been reading some owners reviews on various sites, the majority seem to comment mainly on how loud it is on the motorway?? is this the engine or just road noise they are tlaking about?
