1080 to 2080 upgrade?

I purchased an EVGA 1080 SC a couple of months ago in the knowledge of their step up programme and the imminent announcement of new cards meaning I could potentially upgrade should I wish to.

I've done the maths and i'd have to pay an extra £227 for the upgrade including shipping costs. In total I'd have paid £780 for the 2080. This is better than selling my 1080 on eBay and just buying a 2080.

The card is a reference model 2080 XC Black Edition Gaming.

Regarding my set up, I've got a 8086k @ 5ghz and my current monitor is 1440p at 60hz which the 1080 is perfectly capable of, but this machine is meant to last me a good 5 years and I would hope during that time I upgrade my monitor to something with a higher refresh rate.

My question is do you think this would be worth it to upgrade given the costs/benefit? TIA

I've just gone from a GTX1080 to an RTX2080 and I wouldn't recommend it, I ended up returning the card due to coil whine but honestly I'm thankful as it gave an excuse to return it.

At 1440p/60z it's a waste of money, it's a weird card because the same reason I never upgraded to a GTX1080Ti is that I never thought it offered enough, and that hasn't changed with the RTX2080.

Unless you're gaming at 1080p240hz. 1440p144hz or 4K don't bother.

Tough one. It seems like a pretty ok deal as a step up. And you will never get as much for your 1080 again.

These are your choices.

Option 1: Keep the 1080 for 5 years. But, if you change your monitor to something better, the 1080 might struggle. Upgrading to a Gsync monitor would help extend the life of your card.

Option 2: Upgrade to the 2080 and keep that for 5 years. It gets you the best value for your 1080. It will also last longer than the 1080. Another advantage is that it supports the new technologies like Ray Tracing and DLSS. But, it's first gen tech and very few games will be using it. We still don't have all the information either and are only guessing at performance.

Option 3: Keep the 1080 and upgrade to the 7nm cards next year. This would be my choice. Save the £227 until then. The actual performance jump in normal games hasn't been great from Pascal to Turing. There should be much better performance with the 7nm cards. Also they will have second generation RTX hardware, so again increased performance and there should be a lot more games around using these new technologies. I think this is the best option if you are keeping your card for 5 years.

What on earth are you playing? If a 1080Ti isn't enough at 1440p something is wrong. A 1080Ti can do a half decent job at 4K, so at 1440p it's more than capable!

He is saying that it didn't feel worth the money with the monitor he is using over the 1080 he has already. He isn't saying the 1080Ti can't do 1440p.

I'd keep your setup as is until you are no longer happy with it as £227 isn't a small amount of money. Maybe in a year or two a new title comes along that the 1080 isn't good enough for, then you will probably be able to get something better for less.

Have you got your wires crossed somewhere? Not sure what you're on about.

Of course the 1080Ti is enough for 1440p, I never said otherwise.

OK, it seemed like you were flat out saying the 1080Ti was a waste of money at 1440p, but I see you were only saying that in specific reference to coming from a 1080. Depends what price we're talking about. As I recall, was a solid 15-20% average gain, so depends how much you'd get for 1080 vs buying a 1080Ti. But yeah, the cost/performance ratio is certainly worse when it comes to the 20xx series... whatever GPU you have, the value is just not there given how expensive they are.

Nope. I did not get that from reading what he said. I think it was just you ;)

standard 1080 to 2080 upgrade? for £227?
I would in an instant personally

today the 2080 is essentially a 1080ti , give a little in 1 game take a little in another...

but going forward as drivers mature, DLSS may become a thing, RTX may become a thing i think that 2080 may endup being worth your while..

today a 2nd hand 1080 is worth what.... £300? so that means relatively you are getting a 2080 for £527 i think it even makes sense for selling later on too. in 12 months time how much will a 2nd hand 1080 be worth vs how much is a 2080 worth? you may get a large chunk of yout 227 back when you sell up.
.
sounds good to me.

Seems pretty good price only £227 to swap a 1080 for a 2080?

If I could swap my 1080 for a 2080 for only £227 I would do it.

Depends on how long you had your 1080 for though wouldn't it? If you spent £553 last month on buying a 1080 and had to spend another £227 this month to get a 2080 would you?

personally i would not have paid 553 for a 1080 last month when i could have gotten a 1080ti for less than £100 more ;)

but hypothetically yeah i still would because regardless of what a 1080 was worth last month, 2nd hand it is worth about £300 now, the 2080 has clear and obvious improvements over the 1080.... IF a 1080 was worth 553 of your hard earned cash then surely the 2080 is worth 227 extra? (and going forward i would expect the 2080 to hold its 2nd hand value more)

its a bit like a mars bar... if i bought a mars bar last week for £1 and this week they were only 40p... i would STILL swap it for a king sized one if you told me i only had to pay 15p more :)

What about step up to 1080 ti? For the 2000 series the step up is the black version which may be one of these b grade chips. Iirc for the 1080 ti it is the sc2 which is a good model.
