Hello,
I’ve got a media centre PC and have downloaded a load of HD media (WMV and .mkv containers), as I’m running out of drive space I’ve been backing up wherever possible, I’ve discovered that 720p films can be read form a DVD drive without any issues. However, 1080p films have ‘jerky’ playback, without too much knowledge I’m assuming either:
There is something wrong with my DVD-drive (unlikely as I have a total of 4 in 2 PC’s)
1080p films require too much info to be read on the fly from a DVD drive (I don’t know the bitrate but as the quality is superb I’m guessing its high – 8GB file size)
If I’m correct and 1080p films can’t be read on the fly, I’d guess my option’s are limited to a HD optical drive of some kind (too dear at present), or an external hard drive, my question is, are the USB external cases quick enough to be streamed through a USB port for a HD codec?
Unfortunately I don’t know the exact bitrates of the films but I’m guessing if you know the answer to the question you’ll know the standard rate for a 1080p ~2hour 8GB film anyway!
Thanks in advance.
