NEW POST!

haha! Well things change and 2 years later Im still in the Corsa (which has gone french on me and has been having issues with its sensors). Anyway, I'm now living much closer to work and don't have to see some ginger bint miles away, so now its tops of 8k a year which is easily petrol money.

Same sort of figures apply, and I suppose the A3 & 1 Series are still some choices. Second hand trade (so I can try and partex the vaux) between 6k and 10k, though the lower the better. I dont need a barge, but some space would be great, otherwise I would be after a z4! Insurance I would like to not be too much of a killer (group 15 max?).

So what others should I be looking at?

Thanks

A3
1 Series (what petrol engine size?)
Seat Cupra
Focus (doesnt seem to inspire)
Astra (oh god, not another vaux)
Megane (i though my corsa electrics were bad!!!)
Maybe an A4 (saw an s-line which looked alright)

OLD POST
Right, the little corsa has done me well but it is coming up to 80k miles so i am thinking of moving on from the little blighter.

Next month is bonus time and if it is to go by last years bonus, it could be a biggy. Anyway, i have been trying to rack my brains over what to go for. Anyway, it won't be happening for at least 4 months so i need to start coming up with some ideas.

The upper limit is 10k. I will have about 6k of my own money (give or take) and i am going to make up the rest with a small loan at about 250~300 per month (easily affordable).

I was toying with the idea of going for brand new but everyone say i am mad to do that. I do like the look of the 3 door astra (shock, now wheres the vauxhall bashing?) and i was thinking of getting a 1.8 150 deisel on finance as i have some gm points to use up plus i can part exchange the old corsa. I quite liked the idea of get a 3 year finance deal with 3 years of warrenty cover.

It doesn't have to be a big car because i don't have a family, just something fun and good off the line. I do visits to london every weekend to see the mrs. I think i do about 15k miles a year, so maybe a deisel to save a few penies? Maybe an A3?

So what do we think then?

And no, i don't want to drive a mondeo!

Fabia VRS? Diesels and can be remapped to hell and back form what I hear.

Alternatively, what about the high-powered SEAT Leon diesels which are ~150 stock and can also be remapped to hell and back. :)

He only wants one car :p

I recommend a Seat Leon Cupra R.

Beat me to it!

Definately a great choice for under 10K and fast off the line, and fun to drive.

Especially if he likes the A3.

Pics to entice Here and Here

I wouldn't mind a Cupra Type R myself, but most of the new-body type models (post 53 plate??) seem to go for £13k plus.

They don't seem to be going down in price either over the past year that i've been looking at them!

£13K plus for a 53 plate? Your having a laugh.

Mine is valued for about £9500 (53 plate), and i've seen them as low as £9K

And please don't call them Type-R's :(

Hmm, looks alright. Whats the insurance group on this?

So what else do we have to offer? I surprise Fox hasn't posted yet, he loves these kind of threads. :D

Group 17.

225BHP, stupid fast for a car of its class/weight, and due to being a golf MK4/MK1 A3 underneath is also reliable. Has the same basic dashboard as a MK1 A3 too.

How old are you and what kind of NCB have you got?

I insured mine this year for £830 (4yrs NCB/23 years old).

Maybe i'm looking in the wrong places then.
I've seen a few 04/54/05 plates, with sub-30,000 miles, and they're all £12+. Mind you they are approved 2nd hand from the Seat website.

I'm not too sure about buying off Ebay or off some bloke in the paper :(

Where else is reliable?

For its weight AND class its average?

Show me something quicker in its class and with its weight?

Hot hatch class so just about anything? Megane, focus ST, VXR

Megane = Quicker to 60 (0.3s), but not after that.
Focus = Quicker to 60 (on paper by 0.1s).
Astra = Get to a bend? Fast doesn't mean only in a straight line, i'd assume you know that.

If you are comparing cars of its generation, the Astra and Focus aren't even comparable, you are looking at the MK4 astra GSI and the Focus RS.

Ironically you're the only one talking about straight line speed.

I still wouldn't say the Leon CR is "stupid fast for it's class" though, it's not like it's in a league of it's own as far as hot hatches go.

Pistonheads.co.uk is good, mostly car enthuisiasts too. Tried autotrader?

No, i've quoted figures for straightline speed.

I was originally talking overall, however figures for that are impossible to attain.

Why is it you and simon have this obsession with badmouthing anything that isn't either something you own or something the other one owns?
