12GB vram enough for 4K? Discuss..

Few reviewers have pointed out the 4070 Ti's 12Gb is running out at 4K.

The worst offender so far is Nvidia sponsored Cyber Punk running DLSS3 Frame Generation where vram usage surpasses 12Gb@4K and then passes over to system ram.

As the 4070Ti pricing is where it is, are new gen 12Gb gpus just aimed at @1440p now?

Don't agree that it's not aimed at 4K, Nv marketing is all over the faster than a 3090Ti.

9.50 DLSS3 FG vram usage, maybe explains why DLSS3's not coming for Ampere.

Perhaps if FG has a vram overhead it'd only work on the 3090's due to increased vram usage for FG, or it's down to drivers/bugs/192 bus, just being speculative.

Nvidias Portal RTX 4K Ultra settings has a 16Gb vram requirement, so canny blame AMD this time folks.

Does it? I played Ultra just fine at around 60fps. But that was using DLSS performance. Unless one has a 4090 you can't even consider playing that game without DLSS anyways.

Yes according to Nvidia, it needs 16gb, but like myself you can't run DLSS3 to test, maybe requires extra vram usage for FG might not.

Nah, it'll just be a wall of the same video over and over again. 4k means using DLSS, which means the GPU isn't rendering 4k natively...But I'm getting off this roundabout as I'm in favour of upscaling, even if I don't agree with all the base points.

Looking forward to Spiderman's **** once it inevitably meanders to frame generation though.

Yeah, I got as far as getting a crocodile sidekick. Not for me.

Made me see the limits of my 10gb, and I'm fine with it. I could get it working without the HD pack, but the HD pack added.... Not enough for me. However, must be said I couldn't get it going with 10gb.

12gb was apparently enough for the HD pack (reduced from 16gb), which is why I'd actually be interested in how it runs on a 4070ti. Is it vram? Is it grunt?

Same here but we were all doing it wrong.

The funny part is the texture pack won’t look any better than a standard textures shipped in a game that works on a 8GB card.

Happy with my display thank you very much. It is arguably one of the best monitors money can buy. Only way I change it is if they release a 4K QD-OLED.

65" QD-OLED says you can tell the difference, when you game on one, come back and tell me you can't see the difference between low Res and high Res assets.

Yes, QD-Oled is outstanding, could have kept the money and got a 4090 with change back when they released, glad I never as this is the best upgrade I've done in years.

Not really, can be done but don't need to as PCs situated behind the TV wall, it's also connected to a 1440p screen for everyday PC use, using lightspeed(deals with the range) mouse/kb can use either panel without too much hassle.

Those Forspoken requirements do not state the game requires 16GB VRAM. They state it needs a 4080... which has 16GB VRAM. So if you spent all that extra on a 3090 over VRAM worries, you still can't play the game on max settings (same with Portal) - proving that the overall GPU perf would come into play long before the VRAM, which is exactly what people said at the time.

Both Ultra GPUs state 16Gb Vram, as one of them is a 6800xt, the other a much faster 4080, it's looking more of a claimed vram minimum to me.

Whether it's BS or not we don't have long to find out if some of us can squeeze 16 into 10 or 12.

I've got a 10gb 3080 FE, you got the wrong guy for owning a 3090.

As I'm a fan of the franchise I thought I'd grab FC6 from members market pre launch.

Since it turned out it can't run full settings on a 3080 due to it's vram limitation, I think it was a bargain just paying £15 to complete my FC collection don't you think?


As you've ditched your 3080 for a 4090, do you recommend junking the vram limited 10Gb 80 and go for the 4090, does it play FC6 ok?

There are other titles like you say where it's a struggle too, but there's usually a setting slider that I tend to turn down to accommodate the low 10Gb limit on titles where only having 10Gb vram creates stutter or a slideshow.

Imagine 12Gb's going to go the same way as 10Gb this gen but they've upped the £650 to £800-£1000+

The only people it gives grief to is the ones it triggers any time it's mentioned 10Gb wasn't ever enough.

Didn't you have a 80FE, scalped it, then thought 8Gb was enough to sell it on as well and eventually settle on 12Gb, yet laugh at me for saying 10Gb's not enough?

Got a launch day msrp AIB £519 3070, now in the lads PC, got a 3080FE into my PC eventually as we all know Nv d......r......i......p fed them to maintain sky high pricing, but I've always maintained the 3080FE@msrp is a smashing gpu, shame about the 10Gb.
