£130 for missing a 1 hour dental appointment

If you'd gave them an hour or two notice they would probably have tried to fill the spot, but as you forgot they won't have known if you were coming and it was too late to find a late replacement anyway.

You'll just have to take it on the chin and start using a calendar to make a note of any appointments.

just pay up and stop being so tight. :p

I go to a private dentist via denplan. I was 2 hours late for my appointment earlier this week due to getting mixed up, they rearranged the appointment, no charges.

No idea of the legal ramifications of this, but I once missed an appointment because I'd forgotten about it. Since then I've started heavily relying on Google Calendar, it's absolutely fantastic - at my dentists you make an appointment for 6 months time, stick it in Google calendar and I'll get a text message the day before it's due. You should use it or a similar service.

How do you get google calender to send a text?

Forgetting is a poor excuse really mate. Wasting his time and assistants if he had one which they normally do.

Its polite curtesy to remember.

Just pay up if you like the dentist.

id also charge for my time if some one made a appointment and didnt turn up/wasnt in for what ever profession.

Ring them talk to them and if they refuse to drop the charge move else where. You are a private customer and the joy of the free market is you can take your money where you want. Getting a new NHS dentist might be a pain getting a new private dentist is as simple as showing up with your credit card.

Its not like that...

They just lost an hours earnings because he didn't turn up and they couldn't fill it - and from my experience they do try to fill it, if you don't like it don't be late its not their fault the work wasn't carried out it was yours.

Mine charges £180 if you miss an entire hour appointment based on 12x5 minute appointments which are normally £14.80 or something like that.

DiamondMark (i think) and the other guy were right when they said its up to the dentist to prove a loss of earnings.

I have missed a few appointments, but have always sweet talked them into waiving it.

Its the same principal as car parking tickets... the charge has to be REASONABLE, so if the car parking fee was £1.50, and you parked over two spaces, then it would be REASONABLE for them to charge you for two, NOT to fine you £250 or whatever to release a clamp.

Dentists are usually very busy, and there would have been no problem in shuffling things round a little and get you in later in the day.

To impose a "fine" such as this is almost imaginary. Much like a restaurant trying to charge you for the full meal that you "might" have had if you handn't missed your table reservation.

£130 seems harsh, though. Something like £20-40 would sting you enough to make a difference. I bet the dentist didn't sit around for your allotted time playing Peggle, either. He must have completed other work during that time or seen another patient.

I want to play peggle now damn you

God, how many of you are behaving like complete ****. How would the economy run if everyone took the view that they shouldnt have to pay for something you have agreed to buy.

Oh sorry mate, I commissioned that nice oak table lovingly crafted by you for a month but I have changed my mind. Sorry, forgot about it. What do you think would happen if everyone was such an idiot and mucked around with services.

You forgot about it so talk to them about it, dont be a complete **** about it.

It's probably more likely a case of "pay up or find another dentist", and given how much in demand dentists are, the surgery probably doesn't give a stuff if the odd person doesn't come back again.

Fingers crossed they'll see sense and (as you mention) waive the charges for a one-off slip of the mind.
