14 year old arrested for bringing in homemade clock

I think the big issue is the mounting of it in a briefcase. Yes make a clock, thats great.

But make a digital clock and install it in a briefcase and have it beep does seem to be almost making it like a hoax bomb like kids see in films/tv.

Isn't the justice system supposed to be innocent until proven guilty? Not guilty until proven innocent...

The teacher could have asked to examine it... she didn't... she just assumed it was a bomb. Inflicting that unnecessary suffering on a 14 year old is just idiotic.

Why no link to the story?

Ooops, forgot to add it. Have now added it.

Yeah have a bit more info (original story):

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/community-news/northwest-dallas-county/headlines/20150915-irving-9th-grader-arrested-after-taking-homemade-clock-to-school.ece?hootPostID=532c3696eb235a3f481ed45f733e6d90

“She was like, it looks like a bomb,” he said. “I told her, ‘It doesn’t look like a bomb to me.’” The teacher kept the clock. When the principal and a police officer pulled Ahmed out of sixth period, he suspected he wouldn’t get it back.

"He’s vowed never to take an invention to school again."

The pic of him in handcuffs whilst wearing a NASA t-shirt...

Problem with that theory is where do you draw the line. 14 year kid has imitation gun. Do you ask the kid if its real or quietly call the police?

And then when the police arrive they have to assume its real until proven to be fake surely?

As to whether your are innocent or not comes later with the CPS and a trial.

I do agree that the reaction afterwards seems a bit extreme though.

But again, i do question the fact he made it and fitted it to a briefcase.

My problem is that the teacher immediately assumed it was a bomb, would she have said that if the kids name was David instead of Ahmed? Or if he was white instead of black?

Not saying I agree with the teacher, but with regard to your comment, perhaps the teacher was 'playing the odds.' If it were to be a bomb, based on current global events, it would be highly more likely to be a Muslim. Also, if you genuinely saw what you thought was a bomb, would you go up and ask to inspect it?.... Like **** you would...

He made a clock. If there's a line, he's nowhere near it.

I hope this incident doesn't dampen his enthusiasm for electronics.

Right or wrongly but I would agree with the kid been a muslim called mohammed, the teacher isnt going to take any chances when a pupil has what appears to be a bomb in school are they?

Apparently they did, because it was only later in the day that he was spoken to by teachers and then the police called.

Absolutely no reason to handcuff him either; it would be quite a scary experience for a kid already without adding further humiliation to it. It's easy to see how so many people are shot by police officers in the US when they're so paranoid about the potential threats they're facing that they feel the need to handcuff a 14 year-old without any real provocation.

I understand why they were cautious, but to go through all the notions of arresting him for something that they had no idea about. He was being processed as if he was a criminal, which he most certainly wasn't.

To be fair how many were 14 year old boys in NASA shirts happily parading around the clock they invented. Of course they wouldn't have detected the fact the kid is brighter than average because that's the education system for you.

ISIS thrive on the fact Muslims are made to feel separate from the rest of society and ultimately that's why America will never win the war against terror. As soon as ISIS go it'll be another group.

So we have to pander to dumbwads who think a few wires and a board equal a bomb???

And if it was a bomb the very same people crying about this kid being arrested would no doubt be crying about how useless the police are.

Well that's a pointless statement as that is not what has happened in this case...

Remember when that kid brought a bomb into school and blew himself up? Oh right, i can't...

Well the only one i can find is this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cokeville_Elementary_School_hostage_crisis

Happened in 1986, doesn't exactly happen very often...

Even then, it wasn't caused by a digital clock in a suitcase...
