14 year old arrested for bringing in homemade clock

The 'bomb'

CPCX_zVUwAAseM-.jpg

Looks like a bomb to me, watching all the seasons of 24 has taught me well.

Timer - check
Circuit board - check
Lots of wires - check
dodgy enclosure - check

Object does look dodgy as hell.

Not sure why he was suspended though.

Without knowing all the details, perhaps they believed he was trying to pull a prank - dodgy looking clock mounted in a briefcase?! Given his apparent intelligence I'm surprised he didn't realise what his technology project might look like to some. So perhaps his suspension was punishment for this prank? I'm guessing looking at it he was trying to pull a prank and its blown up in his face (excuse the pun) so he backs tracks and claims no prank!

Reminds me on the idiot a few years back while checking through an American airport thought it would be funny to say 'be careful with my rucksack, it's got 3 bombs in it!'

And if it was a bomb the very same people crying about this kid being arrested would no doubt be crying about how useless the police are.

From what I can make out the response in this case wouldn't have helped.

They let him go on with classes before the police arrived.

I'm not sure what world letting someone you think has a bomb or bomb like device continue with classes until the police arrive would be good (after you've already confronted them), I would expect if they thought it was a bomb or similar for them to do the "evacuate the building and keep everyone away from the suspect device" routine that most organisations tend to have when there is a suspicious device.

But then the whole thing sounds very much like a stupid over reaction and covering of posteriors when they realised what had really happened..

So if they thought it was a bomb they called the bomb squad right? Tell me I'm wrong but I can't see any mention of them, rather they sat on it for a few hours instead?

Intelligence doesn't mean **** without wisdom to exploit it.

Because he's knowingly built something that looks not unlike a bomb and brought it into school?

Something that probably happens on a regular basis in IT and practical classes all across the country.
We were doing "choose your own" projects back when I was in school and things like clocks were fairly common,

It seems that by their description pretty much anything you made in IT that had a circuit board or clock face would count as a "bomb like device" (a lovely vague description), and very hard if not impossible to prove that it wasn't meant to be taken that way.

A home made temperature probe and display for a computer would count as such (digital display, wires, probably a box to house it and let it fit into the front of the computer case neatly), and IIRC going back about 10-15 years people on these boards were making them on a regular basis as ready built ones were rare/expensive and typically had to be imported (I had a go using parts from maplins, including a relay to start fans when the temp reached a set limit).

What an odd and stupid situation, are these teachers ****** idiots.

Either evacuate or don't. It's not a confiscate and let things carry on situation.
Then still suspend him.
