14 year old arrested for bringing in homemade clock

Or you ignore the boys name and / or skin colour and look at the boys interest in engineering which apparently all the reports seem to be have a consensus on.

If it was a risk why didn't the school evacuate this has all the hallmarks of a major back track by the school for handling the situation badly

Perhaps, as I have already stated, they twigged on pretty quickly that it wasn't a bomb. So no need for an evacuation. But did feel the need to have the lad explain why built his clock in such a way. Maybe while getting their explanation from him they pick up on something he says/didn't like his answers. I don't know, again I'm simply putting forward a possible reason for it panning out the way it did.

Maybe you're right, maybe the school messed up and handled it completely wrong. All I've tried to do is put forward a possible reason for it being handled the way it was.

Again, still the obsession with the box of wires and not with how the situation was handled.

But the 'box of wires' is central to the story is it not?

i have simply put forward a notion, an idea as to why it was handled the way it was. Not saying that is how it was - I don't know I wasn't there when the kid was interviewed, neither were any of us on here. Simply stating a hypothesis.

I'm puzzled. If it had been a bomb, should a teacher have poked around it to check? Do teachers get trained in bomb disposal these days?

No they don't, but for future such incidents they should post up in GD, seems we have quite the little gathering of bomb disposal experts on here. :p

""We have always had an outstanding relationship with the Muslim community," Irving Police Department chief Larry Boyd said on Wednesday. "Incidents like this present challenges. We want to learn how we can move forward and turn this into a positive".

The boy was placed in handcuffs and fingerprinted. He was released after it was determined there was no threat.

Later in the day the boy was pulled out of class, interviewed by senior teachers and four police officers, and put into juvenile detention."

I've got a suggestion for PD chief Larry Boyd, how about not handcuffing, fingerprinting and locking someone up unnecessarily, lucky for him the public can't charge the police with wasting their own time.

"He said his engineering teacher had congratulated him but advised him "not to show any other teachers"."

So if the teacher thought there may be a problem, why didn't he do the sensible thing and hold onto it for the rest of the day and ask the boy to collect it at home time?

The school issued a statement saying it "always ask our students and staff to immediately report if they observe any suspicious items". "

As already mentioned, why the time delay? If it was reported immediately, why did it take them so long to act? Who is responsible for the delay, the staff or the police? If it was a real bomb the delayed reaction could've costs lives.

I suspect it is a case of ****** if they do, ****** if they don't. If it had turned out to be real and they hadn't implemented procedures resulting in a bad outcome they'd be in for more flack.

Yeah or better yet informed the head teacher (principle or whoever) so a mistake could be quickly dealt with - though if anything like my technology teacher he was something of the crazy inventor type and not the most rational of thought.

tbh those saying the teacher should have checked it before saying it was a bomb... not being funny but simple advise is if you suspect something to be a bomb you call police. You don't check it yourself.... I mean what if it was a bomb the teacher "harmlessly checking it" could set the thing off.

So fair enough I think the first reaction was fine to call police. That said once it was discovered it was not a bomb, they should have apologised to the student and left it at that. Instead they suspend him ?!? that is completely wrong and unfair on the child.

I'd call letting the child back into class and not calling the bomb squad doing nothing.

That's the thing that gets me about it, if there was any question about it being a bomb the school were even bigger idiots than if they had concluded it wasn't anything.

They didn't call the bomb squad but left him in class. And left everyone exposed to what they thought might have been a bomb.

If they really thought there was any question of it being a bomb you evacuate the building, get everyone to safety and then get the police/bomb squad in, you don't simply put it to one side and let everyone carry on with their normal routine

Was reading an article on Reddit earlier about how Steve Wozniak built a fake bomb in school and it ended up with his principal taking the hoax device and running out onto the football field and ripping the wires out of it... because that's a great thing to do to a bomb.

but was it the blue wire or red wire he ripped out!!

So a teacher knew about it yet the police was still called. Absolutely mind-boggling. I'm sure the boy would have told the head teacher that Mr. Engineering teacher has seen it and could verify that it was a clock. Some serious arse kicking in order I think.

It didn't say, but I assume he just tore the lot out. ****ing stupid thing to move it, let alone start pulling wires out.

When we were kids, my brother and I would check under our car with our dad for anything suspicious before going to school (dad was a cop) and were under strict instructions to "look, don't touch".

given obama has since come out saying "cool clock want to bring it to the white house" how amazing would it be if that happened he takes it there and when the president is looking at it smiling for the pictures the thing exploded and this was super villain Ahmed's plan all along?

arguably for most bombs it would be a perfectly sensible thing to do lol.

especially the current Islamic ones which are just made for a suicide bomber theres no need for complicated move style anti tamper devices, just a simple system to deliver the current to the igniter or blasting cap.

Yes its a sad world and yes im sure been a muslim has been a factor in this whole affair.

No idea why it wasnt stopped at the gates.

But again, if he had made a replica gun for an engineering project and brought it into school, would we be having this conversation?

The more reasonable comparison would be that he made something like a home made pencil and brought it in, the teacher saw the end and called the police...

He didn't make a replica bomb, me made a clock, which needs wires, some way of showing the time and a chassis he could take into school easily.

The reaction by the school and police was ridiculous and terrible, but it does look pretty similar to a real IED.

No it doesn't.

What exactly makes it look like an IED? The suitcase? The wires? Don't ever open up your microwave, you'll have a heart attack.

He could have brought something like this in, laden with explosives, and no one would have given it a second glance:

Seriously?

Must all be bomb experts in here, personally I wouldn't have a clue what an actual bomb looks like and a homemade looking clock in a suitcase would make me somewhat nervous.

Good on them for arresting the idiot and ensuring the situation was dealt with safely.
