Not wanting to be the devil's advocate but whilst at uni I ran a Mk1 Fiat Punto 90 miles a day 5 days a week, that car cost £600 when I bought it and I had planned ahead such as having the spare cash for the inevitable head gasket failure etc and on the understanding I'd do all the servicing myself to keep costs down.
A cheap car sounds like a lot of risk in his position. I would definately have commuted via train if it didn't take 3 times as long and the trip have a net cost of twice as much as fuel at the time; but I don't live next to a station and the station for my uni was the other side of the (admittedly fairy small) city.
