1440p gaming and wait for 4k?

Okay so after many years of using my 12 year old Scan PC (a beast at the time!) I am looking to build a new computer and need some help!

I have a reasonable budget (see below) but can't stretch to a RTX2080 Super so 4k gaming at high res is out of the question!?

Ryzen 5 3600
MSI X570-A PRO MB
16gb Corsair RAM
750w PSU
RTX 2060/2070 Super
500gb M.2 SSD
4k Monitor

I guess what I want is to be able to play games at 1440p with good FPS and then be able to upgrade the GPU only at a later date for 4k gaming, can anyone see an issue/potential bottlenecks with the spec above? :)

4K gaming is very demanding, even a 2080Ti struggles to hold 60 FPS in all of the newer triple-a titles, it will be a while before cards in the same class as an RTX 2060 can offer that level of performance (assuming you would buy another card in this bracket as your upgrade). Personally, I’d say look at an Ultrawide HDR monitor (3440x1440) as an alternative over going 4K, it brings a lot more to the experience in my opinion than you get from going 4K and is a fair bit easier on the GPU (1920x1080 = 2073600// 2560x1440 = 3686400 // 3440x1440 = 4953600 // 3840x2160 = 8294400).

looking at the build above I can’t see it encountering any major issues if you look to go 4K in the future, the question is “when in the future” if you are taking 2 years it should be ok, but if you are looking to add a higher end GPU in 5-6 years then you might find that the 3600 or 16GB or RAM are no longer enough for that generations games - it’s hard for anyone to give a precise answer as we just don’t know what the requirements of games could be in the future or what new technologies will come into play and potentially change the gaming industry.

I guess I would be looking to upgrade the GPU in a couple of years (leaving the CPU unless I really have to and I have the X570 motherboard if needs be), so many permutations of 4k/1440p/1080p, different detail levels, AAA and 144hz/60hz monitors!

Daft question but if my game is outputting 90fps and my monitor is only 60hz will I notice it? i.e. do I need to buy a 144hz monitor to appreciate having a high spec system?

I'm running a 2070s and my previous GPU was used on both a 60hz and 144hz display. Going from 60 to 144 was like night and day. Gsync is so smooth, it really does make the gaming experience much better. The only downside to a 60hz monitor is the ghosting in FPS type games. It's very much noticeable if you go from one type to the other.

In short, yes - get yourself a gsync monitor.
